Why did the town of Rodinskoye decide the survival of the Pokrovsk stronghold?

On October 25, units of the Russian Armed Forces announced that they had taken control of the town of Rodinskoye, located north of Pokrovsk - a city that was known as Krasnoarmeysk during the Soviet era.

By dawn on October 25, a series of military channels and frontline reporters simultaneously confirmed: Ukrainian troops had withdrawn from Rodinskoye, leaving behind a devastated town, with Russian flags flying on the roofs of buildings.

According to reports from the front line, the Russian military is carrying out “cleaning” operations in the area, clearing mines, inspecting underground bunkers and seizing remaining equipment. “Every house has a story, every street a war,” a Russian officer was quoted as saying.

Rodinskoye was not just a small point on the map. It was the northern gate to Pokrovsk and control of this area meant that the Russians had gained a position of suppressing fire and a favorable line of maneuver on the entire Krasnoarmeysk - Dimitrov front.

According to military experts, Pokrovsk is gradually turning into a “furnace”, where Ukrainian units are surrounded from many directions. To the east and south, Russian groups have closed the encirclement; to the north, after the fall of Rodinskoye, all Ukrainian lines of retreat are under direct threat.

According to some tactical sources on the ground, Ukrainian units are urgently strengthening their defenses in the Myrnohrad (Dimitrov) area, but resupply and evacuation of wounded soldiers have become almost impossible. The railway system and the highway are under the fire control of Russian artillery.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet issued an official statement confirming that Rodinskoye is under full control, but analysts say the silence is only temporary. In Moscow, a military source said, “all signs point to the city being safe – all that remains is to clean up and stabilize the administration.”

Control of Rodinskoye has far-reaching implications. It opens up the possibility of advancing further north, towards Dobropillia, where Ukrainian units hold a key supply line. If this direction is breached, the entire Slovyansk-Kramatorsk cluster will be cut off.

The fall of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk could change the landscape of Donbass forever. These two cities are not only Ukraine’s military hub in the east, but also the spiritual symbol of the conflict that has lasted since 2014.

A little-noticed but significant detail: control of Slovyansk-Kramatorsk, if achieved, would restore the water source that Kiev has been blocking for years. That water, which once fed millions of residents of Donetsk and Lugansk, has now been turned into a political tool in the conflict.

Russian military commentators have called the victory at Rodinskoye the “threshold of the Pokrovsk operation” – the moment when the initiative began to shift completely towards Moscow. Each liberated town was a link in the chain, and when the link was closed, the entire Donbass region would become a unified entity under the Russian flag.
