On April 10, Viettel will open a data center in Hoa Lac, which is currently the largest data center in Vietnam.

With a scale of 21,000 m2, 24,000 racks and a power consumption of 30 MW, Viettel's Hoa Lac data center is twice as large as the largest data center currently operating in Vietnam. This center is designed and deployed to ensure 5-layer physical security, which is the highest level currently.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Tung, Head of Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center Project, said that all Viettel data centers are designed according to international standards TIA 942.

According to Mr. Tung, this is a green data center and to meet green standards, it is mandatory to use a water-cooled chiller system, which is the latest technology because water cooling is more optimal and has higher efficiency than air cooling. In addition, Viettel chooses the latest manufacturing equipment such as magnetic cushion and vacuum technology to minimize the power consumption of the chiller equipment.

This data center can connect to all countries and 5 submarine fiber optic cables, with 5 different directions, so it always ensures redundancy. The entire operation of the data center is monitored and supported remotely 24/7.

Viettel’s data center construction funding is using green capital from HSBC Bank. To use green capital, the company must demonstrate that its data center operations meet green standards. This means ensuring green standards and having to come from people, equipment and optimal solutions.

Building this data center, Viettel is committed to green development and participating in green suppliers, committing to Zero carbon waste.

The demand for data storage will increase

Sharing about the new DC, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of Viettel IDC, said that developing data centers is a very strong trend in Vietnam to promote digital transformation, digital government, digital economy , digital society and digital enterprises. According to Mr. Nam's analysis, the world's data center market towards 2030 is growing at a rate of about 7-8%/year. In Asia Pacific, it is forecasted to increase by about 18-19%/year until 2030.

In Vietnam, the data center market is growing at about 14%, twice as fast as the world . Despite strong growth, Vietnam is still in the lower group compared to the region, specifically after Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and on par with Thailand, while the Philippines is in the bottom group.

According to statistics, Vietnam currently has 28 data centers, almost equal to Thailand, but about half of Malaysia, so the need to develop data centers in Vietnam is urgent.

Mr. Nam added that when Viettel inaugurated this data center, it also changed Vietnam's position in terms of data centers. However, compared to the data centers of Big Tech in the world, Viettel's data center is still at an average level.

It is expected that within the next 2 years, Viettel's new data center will fill up about 70% of its capacity. Meanwhile, according to international experience, when a data center reaches 60% capacity, businesses have to consider investing in a new center. Viettel plans to invest in 24 data centers to serve about 5,000 customers and consume 560 MW of electricity.

Currently, network operators are still investing in data centers according to market signals, such as customer demand, geographical location, convenience in energy, transportation, natural disasters, connectivity, etc. to bring efficiency to investors. “Sustainable storage, increasing data standards, but minimizing environmental and energy impacts... Viettel sees the opportunity to invest to ensure national data. Viettel sees the potential of data when the 5G network officially provides services,” said Mr. Le Hoai Nam.
