Focus on pumping irrigation for summer-autumn crop
In mid-June 2025, the Cau Market Pumping Station in Nghi Dien Commune, Nghi Loc District was almost completed and started pumping water for the summer-autumn rice crop. According to Mr. Dang Xuan Duyet - Director of Nghi Loc Irrigation Enterprise, the project has now reached nearly 100% of its volume and is ready to be put into operation with high efficiency. The Cau Market Pumping Station used to take water from Gai Canal to irrigate about 290 hectares of agricultural land in Nghi Dien Commune, but due to outdated equipment, severely damaged station buildings, low operating efficiency, and high electricity loss, the productivity was only about 70%.

Since 2024, Cau Market Pumping Station has been comprehensively upgraded with 5 modern units, newly built station house, operation house and more than 1 km of solid canal. Since the beginning of June 2025, the station has been operating stably with a capacity of 1,300 m³/hour/5 machines, ensuring adequate irrigation water supply for the entire summer-autumn crop production area of the commune.
Mr. Tran Van Tinh, a farmer in Nghi Dien commune, excitedly shared: "Before, every summer-autumn crop, we were worried because the water came in drops, but now thanks to the new pumping station, the water comes right to the rice fields, the rice plants grow well, and people are very reassured."

Currently, Nghi Loc Irrigation Enterprise is managing 5 pumping stations serving irrigation for about 1,200 hectares of rice. However, many stations have seriously degraded such as Pumping Station 18 in Nghi My Commune, Cho Quan Pumping Station in Nghi Hoa Commune and Ha Thanh Pumping Station in Nghi Phuong Commune, which are in dire need of early investment and upgrading to ensure stable production.
In Hung Nguyen district, the Rum River Pumping Station - Chau Nhan commune is also being accelerated in construction to replace 5 old field pumping stations that no longer meet the irrigation needs of the production area. Mr. Pham The Phi - Head of Technical Department, Nam Irrigation Company Limited said: "From 2024, Rum River Pumping Station will be invested synchronously with suction tank, discharge tank, station house and 3 generators with a capacity of 1,700 m³/hour/unit. To date, the project has completed about 80% of the volume and is expected to be put into use from July 2025, serving irrigation for more than 500 hectares in Hung Loi, Hung Phuc, Hung Nghia communes".

Not only pumping stations, reservoirs are also being upgraded to increase water storage and regulation capacity. A typical example is Khe Xiem reservoir in Nghi Dong commune, Nghi Loc district, which has just been completed, ensuring irrigation for more than 200 hectares of rice. The reservoir has been reinforced upstream and downstream, and the dam and channel have been upgraded to operate more safely and effectively.
Nam Irrigation Company Limited - the unit directly managing and operating the large irrigation system in Nghe An , is currently managing 42 pumping stations serving irrigation for 27,000 hectares of rice, of which 85% of the area uses electric pumps. However, most of these pumping stations have been in operation for many years, many of which have seriously degraded equipment. In recent times, thanks to the investment attention of the State, many projects have been renovated and upgraded, typically the projects of Tho Son Pumping Station, Thanh Phong Pumping Station, Cau Market Pumping Station, Khe Xiem Reservoir, dredging Nha Le Canal, repairing 9A Canal, 4AC Pumping Station... All projects are being constructed on schedule, ensuring volume, quality and disbursement according to the set plan.

Continue to invest and upgrade pumping stations
However, the reality shows that there are still a series of pumping stations in districts such as Anh Son, Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, etc. that are in a state of serious disrepair. Many stations located along the Con and Lam rivers are rusted, the discharge tanks show signs of cracking, and measuring equipment such as meters, switches, relays, etc. are corroded and no longer usable. This poses an urgent need for investment and maintenance to avoid losing the ability to serve irrigation in the coming years.
Nghe An province currently has more than 500 pumping stations, mainly managed by agricultural cooperatives and irrigation units. Since 2020, by combining support funds from the central and local governments, the province has upgraded more than 50 pumping stations, mainly in Do Luong, Yen Thanh, Nghia Dan districts... In the coming time, localities such as Nghi Loc, Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan, Yen Thanh will continue to be allocated capital to renovate, install new pumps, and improve service capacity.
In order to continue to improve the irrigation system in the area, the People's Committee of Nghe An province is developing a project to borrow capital from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) with a total capital of more than 593 billion VND. The project aims to upgrade 60/74 pumping stations along Lam River in Anh Son, Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Hung Nguyen and Nam Dan districts, expected to be implemented in the period of 2025-2028, and put into use in 2029.

According to the representative of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghe An province, in order to effectively implement the above projects, localities need to proactively review the current status of the pumping station system, prepare investment proposal reports and send them to relevant departments and branches. At the same time, call for legal and socialized capital sources to invest, repair and periodically maintain, to avoid serious system degradation, affecting crop productivity and output.
