Snowman making in Hanoi makes a lot of money during Christmas season

(VTC News) - With more than 3 weeks left until Christmas 2024, snowman and Santa Claus making facilities in Hanoi are busy producing to supply the Christmas market in time.

Snowman making is a lucrative profession in Hanoi.

Although Christmas is still more than 3 weeks away, production facilities on Hang Ma Street (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi) are busy producing snowmen, reindeer, and Santa Claus models to serve customers.

Besides traditional decorative items such as laurel wreaths, golden bells, Santa Claus, foam snowmen are also loved by many customers.

Mr. Tuan, who has been making foam snowmen for more than 20 years, said that since the end of November, his store has had many orders for snowmen, most of which are from schools, shops, restaurants, and cafes buying them for Christmas decoration.

From large foam sheets, Mr. Tuan cuts them into small blocks to create snowmen.

Each foam block is marked to help the worker shape and cut more easily.

Then the worker meticulously cut the foam from a cylindrical block into a round block. "Since the old days, when I saw people doing it, I also learned and imitated them, and gradually became familiar with it and became proficient at the job. Cutting and carving foam requires practice, and once you are proficient, you can cut hundreds of pieces evenly."

Mr. Tuan said that because he and his wife mainly work and do not hire workers, when there are many orders, the two of them have to work from morning to late at night. "We mainly follow orders from wholesale and retail customers. Currently, the store sells nearly 30 snowmen every day, earning nearly 10 million VND, not including labor and materials. However, this job is only seasonal. After the festival season, I go back to making votive offerings," Mr. Tuan said.

After meticulous steps such as carving foam, shaping and smoothing, finally comes the priming, glittering, and decorating accessories, eyes, nose, and buttons for the snowman.

Mr. Tuan said that for foam snowmen measuring 2m - 3m, it takes him about 2 - 3 days to complete, and for snowmen measuring 60cm or smaller, it takes about 3 hours to complete.

Snowmen after being completed with all kinds of sizes.

Small foam snowmen cost 300,000 VND/product, while larger snowmen cost from 500,000 VND to several million VND.

"Today I came to buy a foam snowman for 450,000 VND for the kindergarten. I am very satisfied because the snowman is made with beautiful details," said Ms. Hang (Hoan Kiem district).

In addition to making snowmen, Mr. Tuan also creates many other decorative foam products related to Christmas.
