“Skoda Language” – Where every name tells a story

In the world of automobiles, a name is not simply a title to distinguish car models. With Skoda – a 130-year-old car brand from the Czech Republic, each name engraved on the rear of the car contains a unique “language”. It is a subtle combination of geography, history, and the desire to conquer.

1. The naming convention reflects the wild and powerful DNA of the SUV line.

If you're a Skoda enthusiast, you'll easily recognize an interesting "code" that unifies the entire range of the brand's SUVs: they all begin with the letter K and end with the letter Q. This isn't a coincidence, but a naming convention that celebrates natural strength and enduring performance.

Inspired by Kodiak Island and the brown bear.

It all started with the Kodiaq – Skoda's flagship 7-seater SUV. The name is inspired by Kodiak Island, located in the frigid Alaskan wilderness. This is home to the giant Kodiak brown bear – a symbol of strength, protection, and remarkable adaptability in harsh environments.

To show respect for the local culture, Skoda turned to the language of the Alutiiq people (the indigenous inhabitants of the island). In this language, the names of animals often end with the suffix "q". From there, the letter "q" became a distinguishing mark, an unmistakable DNA for the brand's SUV models.

The continuation of Kushaq and Karoq

This rule continues to be applied consistently to the strategic vehicle lines currently available in Vietnam:

      • Skoda Karoq: This name is an artistic play on words, combining the words “Kaa’raq” (car) and “Ruq” (arrow) in the Alutiiq language. The arrow is also the central symbol in the Skoda logo, representing speed and precision.
      • Skoda Kushaq: Inspired by the ancient Sanskrit word “Kushak,” meaning King or Emperor, this name affirms the leading position and confidence of this dynamic B-SUV, ready to conquer any urban road.

2. The Electrochemical Era: Keep “q”, add “E”

As the global automotive industry transitions to the electric vehicle (EV) era, Skoda has demonstrated flexibility in innovative thinking while still respecting tradition.

The company's electric vehicle line, exemplified by the Enyaq , retains the "q" suffix to emphasize its status as a true SUV with powerful performance. However, the first letter has been changed to "E"—representing Electric and Era .

The name “Enyaq” is derived from the Irish word “Enya,” meaning “energy” or “life.” This conveys the message of a green, sustainable future that Skoda is striving for, in line with the core values built over more than a century.

The Skoda Enyaq has previously appeared in Vietnam.

3. Skoda Sedans: Names that tell a heritage story.

Unlike the wild and adventurous style of its SUV line, Skoda's sedan models bear more subdued names, reminiscent of the brand's glorious history and significant milestones.

Octavia – The beginning of an era

The Skoda Octavia is the brand's best-selling model globally. The name comes from the Latin word "Octava," meaning "eighth."

Why the number 8? This was the eighth model launched after World War II (1959), marking a resurgence and a significant technological transformation for Skoda. To this day, the Octavia remains an icon of standard, practicality, and reliability for European customers.

Slavia – The continuation of a 130-year legacy

If Octavia represents evolution, then Skoda Slavia is a tribute to the past. Before becoming a giant in the automotive industry, the two founders, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, started their business by manufacturing bicycles in 1895. That first bicycle brand was called "Slavia".

Skoda Slavia is manufactured in Vietnam.

Naming the B-segment sedan Slavia serves as a reminder of the entrepreneurial spirit, dedication, and precision engineering quality that have been maintained for the past 130 years. Slavia represents elegance, harmony, and a bridge between the past and the present.

4. Commitment from the names

At Skoda, names are more than just a way to "identify" a car. They are how the brand "communicates" with customers from the very first encounter.

Whether it's the Kushaq, Karoq, and Kodiaq with their spirit of exploration (Let's Explore), or the Slavia and Octavia with their historical depth, they all share a common goal: to provide a truly European, safe, and emotionally engaging driving experience for the driver.

Every Skoda vehicle that rolls onto the road in Vietnam carries not only memorable experiences but also a story of proud cultural heritage.
