Many patients have chronic renal failure on the background of hypertension.

Being treated at the Department of Nephrology and Musculoskeletal, Provincial General Hospital in a state of chronic kidney failure due to complications of high blood pressure, however, patient N.D.H (65 years old, Can Loc commune) still did not know that he had high blood pressure for a long time.

“Sometimes I had headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, and tinnitus, but I thought it was just a sign of aging so I didn’t go to the doctor. It wasn’t until I felt tired and lethargic that I went to the doctor that I found out I had high blood pressure and kidney failure and had to be hospitalized for treatment,” patient N. shared.

At the Cardiology Department, Provincial General Hospital, most patients treated at the department for diseases such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, atherosclerosis, aneurysm, etc. have a history of high blood pressure, which is common in people over 45 years old.

In addition, high blood pressure is also the cause of 80 - 85% of cerebral hemorrhage cases, and 15 - 20% are due to secondary cerebral hemorrhage due to ruptured vascular malformations, brain tumors, vasculitis, etc. Currently, 100% of medical stations in Ha Tinh have implemented a model of managing and treating high blood pressure with a total of over 5,000 people.

A doctor from the Cardiology Department, Provincial General Hospital is examining a patient with high blood pressure being treated at the department.

Doctor Pham Huu Da - Head of Cardiology Department ( Ha Tinh General Hospital) said: "Although high blood pressure causes many dangerous complications, in reality, many patients do not know they have the disease. Only when dangerous complications appear or when they accidentally go for a check-up do they know they have high blood pressure. This makes controlling and preventing complications very difficult. There are many cases of myocardial infarction due to high blood pressure."

According to medical experts, a person is considered to have high blood pressure when his systolic blood pressure is > 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure is > 90 mmHg. In addition to age and gender issues, unhealthy lifestyle, abuse of stimulants, and unscientific diet are some of the risks that cause high blood pressure.

It is known that currently, diagnosing high blood pressure is quite simple. In addition to people being able to buy a home blood pressure monitor, all health stations in Ha Tinh have programs to screen and treat non-communicable diseases, including high blood pressure and diabetes. People can proactively go to health stations to check their blood pressure regularly and if they have high blood pressure, doctors will create a record and provide regular treatment advice.

“Although diagnosing hypertension is very simple, people are still subjective, not paying attention to measuring blood pressure and proactively screening, especially in rural areas, remote areas. This makes the number of patients diagnosed with hypertension still low, potentially very dangerous for patients if complications appear. On the other hand, many patients with hypertension, cardiovascular complications, but after stable treatment and discharge from the hospital, do not comply with the recommendations to control blood pressure with medication, maintain a healthy lifestyle and check blood pressure regularly. This leads to the dangers related to complications of hypertension continuing to recur and becoming more and more serious,” said Dr. Pham Huu Da.

According to recommendations from the health sector, in addition to unchangeable risk factors such as genetics, chronic diseases or gender, blood pressure can be controlled by changing eating habits, eating more green vegetables, fruits, reducing salty diet. Increase physical activity, exercise, limit alcohol and do not smoke. Check blood pressure regularly to detect early if you have the disease.

For people with high blood pressure, it is necessary to comply with treatment and regularly visit medical stations for screening, consultation and continuous care.
