Following the success of the two previous legs in Luang Prabang, Laos, and Hanoi, Vietnam, the Viettel Marathon Angkor Wat leg in Cambodia is expected to welcome 9,000 athletes from many countries and territories around the world. The athletics teams of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia have all confirmed sending athletes to compete.
In particular, attention is focused on Nguyen Thi Oanh. The SEA Games champion in the 5,000m, 3,000m, and 1,500m events recently broke the national record with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes and 49 seconds when she switched to the marathon.
Nguyen Thi Oanh has just broken the national marathon record.
The Viettel Marathon is the first international running event with three stages held in three different Southeast Asian countries. The Laos leg takes place on November 3rd, the Vietnam leg on December 1st, and the final leg in Cambodia on December 22nd. The Viettel Marathon also boasts one of the highest prize pools, totaling $150,000, with a variety of attractive prize categories.
Besides the advanced category, the Viettel Marathon 2024 Angkor Wat leg in Cambodia is receiving attention and a warm welcome from the running community in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and internationally. It is expected that the race will welcome 9,000 athletes to participate in running and exploring this famous complex of historical sites, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
An interesting feature to encourage the running club community is that the top 5 clubs will share a total prize fund of 200 million VND for the Vietnam leg, 90 million VND for the Cambodia leg, and 40 million VND for the remaining leg in Laos, as applied in the Viettel Marathon 2024 system. In particular, the top 5 clubs with the largest combined distance covered by all members across the 3 legs will win the Viettel Marathon Diamond Club award with a prize fund of up to 250 million VND, with the winning club receiving 100 million VND in cash.
The first leg, held in Luang Prabang, Laos, received a warm welcome and enthusiastic response from local people and international athletes. With approximately 5000 participants in four distances – marathon (42.195km), half marathon (21.0975km), 10km, and 5km – the Viettel Marathon Luang Prabang Unitel 2024 is the first road race in Luang Prabang to include a full marathon distance and has the largest number of participants to date.
The Viettel Marathon 2024 continued to generate excitement with its Hanoi leg in Vietnam on December 1st, 2024. Over 10,000 participants, including representatives from the Cambodian and Laotian embassies, a large number of Laotian and Cambodian students studying in Vietnam, and athletes from 24 countries and territories worldwide, demonstrated that the Viettel Marathon transcends a typical sporting event, becoming a bridge connecting and strengthening friendship between regional nations and international friends.
