Nguyen Thi That had an accident and had to leave the prestigious world cycling tournament.

Racer Nguyen Thi That shared that she had an accident in stage 8 of the Giro d'Italia Donne 2023 race when she was 50km from the finish line. Nguyen Thi That had to get in an ambulance and accepted to say goodbye to the tournament.

She said her whole body was covered in scratches and deep wounds. The most serious wound on her knee required more than 10 stitches. The doctor asked Nguyen Thi That to rest for 4 weeks.

The incident happened when Nguyen Thi That was in the final stages of the prestigious Giro d'Italia Donne 2023 race. She said she was getting better every day and getting into the rhythm of the race.

Nguyen Thi That was injured while participating in the Giro d'Italia Donne 2023.

" I personally feel very proud to be a Vietnamese cyclist racing in this major tournament. The entire race was a difficult process. Only I and my teammates who have gone through it together can fully understand it. I am a sprinter, not a mountain biker. But I still tried to stay until the end with my own persistent efforts ," Nguyen Thi That shared.

The Giro d'Italia Donne is one of the three biggest Grand Tours in the world , along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana, for women. The 2023 Giro d'Italia Donne has 9 stages, covering a total distance of 928km. The race starts on June 30 with a 4.4km individual time trial in Chianciano (Italy). The remaining 8 stages are very difficult because most of them are mountain roads.

The tournament has the participation of 24 racing teams, each team has 7 athletes. Of these, 15 teams have reached UCI WorldTeam level. Nguyen Thi That participates in the tournament in the Israeli-Premier Tech Roland racing team of Switzerland. On the International Cycling Union (UCI) rankings, Nguyen Thi That is ranked 101st and 2nd in Asia, after Yanina Kuskova (Uzbekistan).

Before participating in the tournament, Nguyen Thi That won the Asian gold medal and a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nguyen Thi That competed for Israel-Premier Tech Roland to improve her skills, aiming for the Asian Games at the end of the year.
