Recently, Phan Van Tri Primary School (Cau Ong Lanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) announced on its website that it would not accept flowers on Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20), but instead would give books, candy, and school supplies to students.

According to Mr. Le Hong Thai, Principal of the school, on November 20, the school often organizes sports events to connect and create memories for students, but the students only receive certificates of merit after the event ends.

" The school receives many fresh flowers on this day, but the flowers eventually wither, while the students still lack school supplies. Therefore, instead of receiving flowers, the school hopes to receive books, school supplies or candy to encourage the students, making Vietnamese Teachers' Day more meaningful ," said Mr. Thai.

Also according to Mr. Thai, since the previous school year, the school announced that it would not accept flowers to celebrate November 20. This received great consensus, many parents donated school supplies and sports equipment, contributing to increasing resources to support students in participating in cultural, sports and artistic activities.

" With limited funding and facilities, the school hopes that parents and donors will continue to support the students by replacing flowers with practical support ," said Mr. Thai.

Similarly, Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School (Binh Phu Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) also celebrated Vietnamese Teachers' Day November 20th in a light, frugal and sharing way.

Principal Dinh Phu Cuong said that this year the school will not have a big ceremony, only organize a short propaganda session for students on Monday morning.

November 20th falls in the middle of the week, so after the propaganda session, teachers still teach as usual. We agreed not to hold a solemn ceremony, partly because of common difficulties, and partly to save funds to support the people of Central Vietnam affected by natural disasters, as suggested by the Fatherland Front ,” said Mr. Cuong.

According to the principal, not accepting flowers or gifts on November 20 has become a tradition for the past three years. Previously, parents used to exchange flowers for health insurance cards for students, but now they are free. Therefore, parents and donors donate books, notebooks, and school supplies.

We do not call for donations, but parents voluntarily offer to give flowers as gifts to disadvantaged students. When they receive them, the school gives them directly to the students ,” said Mr. Cuong.

The Department of Education and Training of Dong Nai province has implemented the policy of not welcoming or receiving guests, not accepting flowers or congratulatory gifts on the occasion of the Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20. In 2025, in the context of the province being heavily affected by natural disasters, the Department will not welcome or receive guests at its headquarters, and will not accept flowers or congratulatory gifts on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20.

The Department of Education and Training of Dong Nai requested high schools and affiliated units to propagate and organize activities to celebrate November 20 in a practical and effective manner, avoiding ostentation and formality. It is recommended not to organize reception ceremonies, not to accept flowers or gifts. Time and resources should be prioritized for teaching and educational activities in schools.
