Quinn Truc Tran - an actress born in 1994, is attracting attention when appearing in the American film A tourist's guide to love (Vietnamese title: A tourist's love journey) directed by Steven K. Tsuchida, broadcast on Netflix. The film was filmed mostly in Vietnam, and since its release has attracted the attention of the audience, reaching the number 1 position in the global Top 10 rankings on this online movie platform.
Actors Scott Ly and Quinn Truc Tran filmed a scene at Ben Thanh Market (HCMC) in the movie A tourist's guide to love.
Quinn Truc Tran was once known for her role as Thai Hoa's rebellious younger sister in the movie "My Husband" (2018, directed by Charlie Nguyen) and small roles in the movies: "Co Ba Sai Gon" and "Splendid Years". Sharing about the opportunity to appear in "A Tourist's Guide to Love" , Quinn Truc Tran said it was a coincidence when she participated in the casting of the movie: "When I went to audition, the director told me that he didn't want to find a girl with a purely Asian appearance. I feel lucky because I have what the director needs, so I can appear in the movie". This is the first time Quinn Truc Tran has participated in an international film project.
A tourist's guide to love also features actor Scott Ly (also known as Scott Quoc Ly - Vietnamese American, born in 1978) and Meritorious Artist Le Thien. In the film, Scott Ly plays Sinh, a tour guide, accompanying Amanda (actress Rachael Leigh Cook) on a "healing" journey in Vietnam after a love incident. Although Scott Ly's acting is limited, he makes up for it with his fluent Vietnamese speaking ability, beautiful body and romantic hair. Meanwhile, Meritorious Artist Le Thien - a veteran face of Vietnamese cinema - is also loved for his role as the grandmother of the male lead Scott Ly with a kind and hospitable personality.
Artist Hong Dao recently also delighted the audience when she played a Vietnamese mother in Beef (Vietnamese title: Discord) - a 10-episode American comedy series that has become a global hit. She plays Hanh Trinh - the mother of the female lead Amy Lau (played by Ali Wong). On the brink of divorce, Amy decides to return home and Ms. Hanh Trinh cooks dinner to treat her children with sour soup. On many Vietnamese film forums, the audience said they were surprised to see Hong Dao participating in an international project that is receiving attention, introducing dishes with a strong Vietnamese flavor. Hong Dao said: "I accepted the invitation from A24 - the production company of the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won the 2023 Oscars in March with 7 awards - because I liked the funny and realistic script."
Actor Lien Binh Phat, born in 1990 and from Kien Giang, (who played the main role in the films Song Lang, Ngoi Nha Buom Buom...) has just announced that he is collaborating with Chinese film beauty Truong Quan Ninh in the movie Hoa Ngoai Chi Y (English title: Doctor Outsider). The film is produced in Taiwan, set in the life of immigrants. Lien Binh Phat plays a Vietnamese doctor living in Taiwan. The reason for being accepted for the role is because Lien Binh Phat received the "Promising Actor" award at the Tokyo Gemstone Award, was honored as "New Asian Star" at the Asian Stars Up Next Award at the Macao International Film Festival (China), so he has a reputation for foreign filmmakers to invite. In 2021, Lien Binh Phat also played the main role in the Japanese film Come and Go directed by Lim Kah Wai.

Opportunities are increasingly open
Other Vietnamese or Vietnamese-origin actors acting in foreign films include Nhung Kate (famous for the films Secret of the Golden Triangle, The Maid, Fire Files...) with the leading role in The Continental - the prequel to Keanu Reeves' John Wick series, filmed in Hungary in June 2022; Vietnamese-origin actress Hong Chau stands out with the film The Whale, nominated for "Best Supporting Actress" at the 2023 Oscars, the 76th BAFTA Awards of the British Academy...; Lana Condor (real name Tran Dong Lan) is successful with a series of popular teen films on Netflix: To all the boys I've loved before (Those boys in that year) and American blockbusters such as X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Patriots day (2017), Alita: Battle angel (2018), Deadly class (2019); Kelly Marie Tran is famous for her role as Rose Tico in Star wars: The last Jedi, Star wars: The rise of Skywalker...; and of course, we have to mention Ngo Thanh Van with many projects in Hollywood, most recently The Old Guard 2 co-starring Charlize Theron.
It can be seen that Asian actors are increasingly assigned important roles in the American film market. As online film platforms are increasingly booming, the opportunities for Vietnamese actors or actors of Vietnamese origin to participate with foreign crews are also increasing. Although some appearances of Vietnamese actors in foreign projects are limited in terms of time with supporting characters, to get even that small opportunity is really not easy for Vietnamese actors, because the selection process of foreign crews is always strict and highly professional.

Actor Johnny Tri Nguyen said: "Currently, Vietnamese actors are moving in a more professional direction, as many have joined an agency (representative company) abroad, specifically the US, China... because this is the largest market providing actors for international films. When film crews need to find an Asian actor for a film, they will go to the agency for an introduction."
Director Charlie Nguyen, who was once selected by producer The Weinstein Company as one of the four directors of the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2, said: "In 2015, I recommended Ngo Thanh Van for a role in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 and received approval from the film studio because of her qualities. The success of Ngo Thanh Van's path with agencies that have her profile has helped many other young Vietnamese actors boldly follow her lead. To be able to go further, in my opinion, Vietnamese actors must have enough talent and creative thinking to resonate well with any director; and importantly, they must have enough passion and responsibility for this difficult job, seizing every small opportunity to highlight themselves. Actors who make an effort to equip themselves with additional skills, especially being good at foreign languages, will have more opportunities to make films with foreign crews."
