Scandals related to Tan Hiep Phat products

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí11/04/2023

On December 3, 2014, while selling to a customer, the owner of Vo Van Minh restaurant ( Tien Giang ) discovered a fly in an unopened bottle of Number One water. Mr. Minh kept the bottle and called Tan Hiep Phat, asking them to send a representative to meet him to negotiate.

In the first meeting, Mr. Minh asked the company to give him 1 billion VND or else the news would be leaked. After 3 rounds of negotiation with a written record, the two sides agreed on a price of 500 million VND.

In January 2015, while Tan Hiep Phat employees were handing over 500 million VND, Mr. Minh was caught red-handed by the police while handing over a bottle of water. At the end of that year, the People's Court of Tien Giang Province sentenced Mr. Vo Van Minh to 7 years in prison for the crime of Extortion.

Despite the "victim" mentality, Tan Hiep Phat itself fell into a media crisis afterwards. Many people believed that the company had "trapped" consumers and called for a boycott of Tan Hiep Phat's products. After nearly a year of being involved in the incident, the company announced that the damage was about 2,000 billion VND.

In fact, this "500 million VND fly" incident is typical of Tan Hiep Phat's tactless behavior, and at the same time raises a series of questions about the quality of the company's bottled water products.

Previously, in 2009, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha ( Dong Nai ) discovered that a bottle of Number One energy drink had a straw inside, even though the cap had not been opened. Ms. Ha's restaurant staff then reported it to Tan Hiep Phat, but no one came to resolve the issue.

At that time, Tan Hiep Phat's representative admitted that those were defective products, but when giving compensation to Ms. Ha, Tan Hiep Phat reported to the authorities to arrest her for extortion. Ms. Ha was released because it was determined that she had not violated the law.

A few months later, the investigation agency discovered 3 containers in Ho Chi Minh City containing 26 tons of expired foreign-made soft drink flavorings, labeled as goods sent to Tan Hiep Phat. Checking Tan Hiep Phat's warehouse in Binh Duong , the authorities discovered about 60 barrels (200 liters/barrel) of expired guava, passion fruit, kumquat juice flavorings...

At the end of 2010, Mr. Truong Ngoc Tuan (HCMC) bought 2 boxes of Number One Soya soy milk to sell and use. There was no problem with the first box, but when he took out the second box to sell to customers, Mr. Tuan discovered that 6 bottles were cloudy and had a layer of white precipitate. This batch of goods was marked on the bottles with the production date of September 2010 and the expiration date of June 25, 2011.

Similarly, in 2011, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy (Ba Ria - Vung Tau) sent a complaint to the Southern Consumer Complaints Office about buying 2 bottles of Number One Soya soy milk that were still within the expiry date, but inside the bottle there was a white lump. Tan Hiep Phat admitted that it was the company's product and explained that the above phenomenon occurred due to negligence and technical errors.

Or in June 2012, the Department of Investigation Police on Social Order (C45B), Ministry of Public Security caught Tran Quoc Tuan (HCMC) receiving 50 million VND from Tan Hiep Phat. According to the investigation agency's report, Tuan discovered a bottle of green tea with a cockroach inside, so he called Tan Hiep Phat to report and offered to "exchange" the bottle of water for 50 million VND.

Both sides signed a "silence purchase" agreement, but Tan Hiep Phat still reported the blackmail to the police. On June 5, 2012, while the two sides were exchanging money and evidence at a coffee shop in Binh Thanh, they were arrested by detectives.
