Through many changes, Bien Hoa - Dong Nai land still retains its rich cultural source, has been breathing into it a new breath of vitality, in harmony with the era of strong growth of the nation.
From primitive roots to multicultural land
One afternoon in June, we strolled along the banks of the Dong Nai River - "the source of cultural flows". The winding river carries alluvium and memories of many generations. On the asphalt roads today, there are still traces of many traditional craft villages that made Bien Hoa famous hundreds of years ago.
At Hien Nam Pottery Workshop (Hoa An Ward, Bien Hoa City), Ms. Pham Ngoc Suong, nearly 70 years old, is still diligently painting patterns on ceramic vases.
Mrs. Suong smiled gently: “Many people advised me to quit this job, but as long as I can do it, I will keep the soul of the land. Machines can replace many steps, but the soul must be “breathed” into it by human hands.”
Dong Nai is continuing its development story by preserving the spirit of its ancestors, blending with modern life. The cultural identity here is not only preserved, but also becomes an endogenous resource, promoting Dong Nai's integration, affirming its position in the development journey.
Not only in the pottery village, throughout Bien Hoa - Dong Nai, the vestiges of our ancestors' culture are still clearly present in the daily life of the people. From the Buu Long stone village, Thanh Phu iron casting village, to the ancient communal houses, temples, pagodas, and shrines that are still filled with incense smoke during festivals. The people here know by heart the anecdotes about the heroes who reclaimed the land of the South, about the ancestors who opened up the land, protected the village, and created a strong bond between the community for generations.
According to Dr. Nguyen Van Quyet, Chairman of the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association of Dong Nai province, Dong Nai's multicultural imprint is even more evident when this place converges and blends many communities: Kinh, Hoa, Choro, Stieng, Co Ho... Each community maintains its own customs and festivals, together preserving its identity and enriching the common culture. Dong Nai is also a strongly developing industrial province, attracting a large number of workers from many other localities to "make a living". Generations of Dong Nai people today have been integrating traditional culture into new life by connecting culture with tourism development, strongly spreading culture in this land.
Dong Nai culture in new life
Not only stopping at preserving old values, Bien Hoa - Dong Nai people today are proactively creating a new cultural appearance, suitable for the needs of development and integration. In hamlets, neighborhoods, communes, wards, and towns, amateur music clubs, lion-lion-dragon troupes, art groups... still regularly maintain activities, becoming the "string" connecting the community.
Secretary of the Party Cell of Ward 3, Long Binh Tan Ward (Bien Hoa City) Pho Van Do said that the locality encourages people, especially young people, to participate in cultural and sports activities at the ward's cultural house. These forms of community activities have been contributing to preserving and promoting traditional cultural beauty in modern life. The good thing is that people are very unanimous and join hands to contribute to maintaining
long term operation
At the same time, many young families are contributing to creating a new lifestyle, harmoniously combining traditional culture with modern lifestyle. Many coffee shops, homestays, and cultural check-in spots have sprung up, both preserving the old features through architecture and cuisine, and creating tourist attractions.
Mr. Dinh Van Minh, owner of Xua Coffee (Huynh Van Nghe Street, Dinh Quan Town, Dinh Quan District), said: “The shop displays more than 2,000 artifacts including iron, bronze, and Bien Hoa ceramics. Notable among them are many gongs of ethnic minorities or a collection of ancient coins. Many customers come to the shop not only to enjoy coffee, but also to find a part of the old space, feeling the breath of traditional culture in the midst of modern life.”
Together with the community, authorities at all levels also focus on investing in cultural institutions: cultural houses, libraries, parks, museums, etc. are expanded, with diverse forms of service, becoming familiar meeting places for people.
Dr. Nguyen Van Quyet affirmed: “The cultural identity of Dong Nai today is the continuation of the traditional source, preserved, nurtured and promoted in an industrialized and modernized environment. Cultural vitality is the core factor that creates the sustainability and difference for this land in the flow of integration and development”.
