In the corn fields of Phuoc An 1 and Phuoc An 2 hamlets, Phuoc Vinh commune, our observations show a bustling corn harvest. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thu excitedly said: "My family collaborated with Dong Nam Seed Company to cultivate 6 sao (approximately 0.6 hectares) of seed corn, achieving a yield of 9 quintals per sao (whole ears). The company purchased it at 13,000 VND/kg, and after deducting expenses, we earned nearly 10 million VND per sao." Not only Mr. Thu's family, but many households growing seed corn in Phuoc Vinh commune are also very pleased with the good harvest and high prices. Mr. Huynh Ngoc Hiep stated: "Last year's seed corn yielded 7-8 quintals per sao, and this year it's 1 quintal higher. The price of seed corn is almost double that of commercial corn, so farmers are earning a high income."
Farmers in Phuoc Vinh are harvesting corn.
The above results were achieved thanks to the proactive and flexible approach of agricultural cooperatives in managing production, encouraging farmers to cultivate according to proper technical procedures from land preparation, planting, care, pest and disease control to harvesting. Mr. Le Phuc Hoa, Director of Phuoc An Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: This corn seed crop, cooperative members and farmers cultivated 242 hectares, of which 60 hectares were produced under the large-scale field model in collaboration with Dong Nam Seed Company, Nha Ho Seed Center, and Dong Nai Joint Stock Company Limited in product procurement. From the beginning of the season, the cooperative advised farmers to use high-yield, high-quality varieties such as LVN10, 668, 5885... In addition, the cooperative's irrigation team proactively regulated irrigation water appropriately, ensuring a sufficient water supply from the beginning to the end of the season. As a result, corn yields reached 8-9 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), an increase of 1 quintal compared to the same period last year.
In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season, farmers in Ninh Phuoc district planted 914 hectares of corn; of which, 495 hectares were for seed corn, mainly concentrated in Phuoc Vinh and Phuoc Son communes. Mr. Huynh Tuan Anh, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Ninh Phuoc district, said: The above results were achieved thanks to the efforts of the people, and from the beginning of the season, the district implemented many technical solutions such as encouraging farmers to plant according to the correct seasonal schedule, thus avoiding pests and diseases; organizing training and guiding farmers on how to care for corn plants and applying procedures in seed corn production.
A bountiful corn seed harvest has brought joy and excitement to farmers, encouraging them to continue investing in expanding production in the next season. This has helped establish corn as a key crop in the area and led to the formation of specialized corn seed production zones.
