Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi said that the task of "Registering protection, management and development of geographical indications for Nam O fish sauce products of Da Nang City" under the National Intellectual Property Development Program has been approved by the Minister of Science and Technology and officially implemented from 2022.
After nearly 2 years of implementation, the geographical indication "Nam O" for fish sauce products of Da Nang City has been granted a protection certificate by the National Office of Intellectual Property under Decision No. 437/QD-SHTT dated June 3, 2024 of the National Office of Intellectual Property, this is the first geographical indication of Da Nang City.

According to data from the National Office of Intellectual Property, there are 125 geographical indications in Vietnam for many different types of products, and the "Nam O" geographical indication for fish sauce products is one of three geographical indications for fish sauce products nationwide (including Phu Quoc fish sauce, Phan Thiet fish sauce and Nam O fish sauce).
"The geographical indication "Nam Ô" for protected fish sauce products will be an important legal basis for traditional Nam Ô fish sauce production and trading establishments to enhance their reputation, develop the market, protect the value of quality and origin of traditional fish sauce products with a history of hundreds of years, enhance competitiveness, and create conditions for traditional fish sauce products to be widely consumed in the domestic market and for export," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thi.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology Tran Le Hong, this is the first geographical indication of Da Nang City among 139 protected geographical indications in Vietnam and the third geographical indication for fish sauce products after "Phu Quoc fish sauce" and "Phan Thiet fish sauce". This achievement demonstrates the attention of the City People's Committee, Departments, branches, and the efforts of businesses and people in focusing on developing and protecting agricultural products, especially specialties, associated with advantages in production conditions, culture, and local traditions. This is a direction in line with the trend of localities in agricultural and rural development.
"We need to improve the process of managing and controlling geographical indications to preserve the quality and reputation of the product. This is an important step, deciding the success of a geographical indication and requires the efforts of the entire system, from producers to managers. I hope that the People's Committee of Lien Chieu district will build synchronous and effective solutions on production organization and quality control organization to develop local specialty products in general and Nam O fish sauce geographical indication in particular," said Mr. Tran Le Hong, adding that in the context of global trade, the successful protection of the Nam O fish sauce geographical indication will promote its value, support people and businesses to develop production and markets effectively and sustainably, contributing to stabilizing and improving the lives of people in the geographical area.

The fish sauce making profession not only aims to preserve traditional values and cultural identity of the nation but also contributes to promoting economic and tourism development activities, creating momentum for local socio-economic development.
It is known that Nam O fish sauce making has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage according to Decision No. 2974/QD-BVHTTDL dated August 27, 2019 of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Results after 5 years since the fish sauce making profession became a national intangible cultural heritage: Building and implementing projects and plans to preserve and develop heritage; supporting fish sauce production facilities in craft villages to equip advanced machinery and equipment, invest in tools, packaging, and labels; organizing consultation and guidance for a number of facilities participating in the OCOP Program, achieving HACCP certification; building a safe fish sauce supply chain; building a fleet of 06 boats with a capacity of 20-145 CV to catch anchovies to serve as a source of raw materials for people in craft villages to produce fish sauce; building a story about traditional Nam O fish sauce products, supporting the painting of decorative murals introducing the history of the formation of Nam O village...
At the same time, the city and district have also organized many promotional activities, introducing Nam O fish sauce products to customers inside and outside the city, supporting villagers to participate in fairs and trade connections in the locality and neighboring provinces. Along with that, forming points of sale, displaying OCOP products, Vietnamese goods including Nam O fish sauce at supermarkets and Han market, Con market; connecting tourism businesses to consume products of the craft village, bringing Nam O fish sauce products to famous hotels and resorts in the city.
