OpenAI, a technology company, has officially launched Atlas – a web browser integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), marking a significant step in its strategy to expand market share and challenge Google Chrome's dominance in the global market.
The Atlas browser allows users to open the ChatGPT toolbar in any window to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from websites.
In particular, with its "agent mode" for paid users, ChatGPT can interact directly with websites to fully fulfill complex requests, such as researching and planning shopping for a trip .
During the presentation on October 21st, OpenAI developers demonstrated Atlas's capabilities, with ChatGPT automatically searching for recipes online and purchasing all the necessary ingredients.
The AI assistant navigated itself to the Instacart website and added groceries to the cart – a fully automated process that took just a few minutes to complete.
CEO Sam Altman described it as "a rare, once-in-a-decade opportunity to redefine the concept of web browsing and how it's used."
However, according to analyst Paddy Harrington from market research firm Forrester, OpenAI will face a major challenge in "competing with a giant that holds an overwhelming market share."
Atlas has now been released globally on Apple's macOS operating system and will soon be available on other operating systems such as Windows, iOS, and Android.
This move comes as OpenAI seeks new revenue streams, as the company currently has over 800 million ChatGPT users, but the majority use the free service.
The arrival of Atlas also marks increasingly fierce competition in the AI-integrated browser market, which already includes Perplexity with Comet, Brave Browser, and Opera Neon.
