OpenAI and legendary designer Jony Ive are teaming up to develop a completely new AI hardware device - small, screenless, and wearable around the neck - with plans to mass produce it as early as 2027.
The device comes from “io,” a company founded by Jony Ive that was recently acquired by OpenAI. While it doesn’t have an official name yet, it’s already drawing a lot of attention thanks to its “compact and elegant iPod Shuffle” design.

The device has no screen, but integrates a camera and microphone to recognize the surrounding environment, and connects to smartphones and computers to process and display information.
One of the main usage scenarios is wearing it around your neck as a tech accessory, reminiscent of how the iPod created a tech fashion wave two decades ago.
Ming-Chi Kuo also notes that the current hardware is still prototype and may change before mass production. However, the overall direction is clear: this is a physical AI device, the next trend in the AI industry where artificial intelligence does not just live in the screen but is directly present next to the user, continuously and proactively supporting daily life.

After announcing the $6.5 billion acquisition of io, OpenAI has revealed almost no details about the product, other than to say that “this is going to be a special moment” and that it will “completely change the way we interact with artificial intelligence.”
With the participation of Jony Ive - the man behind the design of the first iPhone, the technology world expects the product to have a breakthrough design philosophy, simple but profound, true to the spirit of the devices that have made Apple's history.
From an early teaser video to supply chain analysis, this wearable AI device is slowly emerging. It’s not a phone, nor is it glasses or a watch — it could be the first personal AI device that truly acts as a companion, one that can actively interact with the user.
The device could usher in a whole new product line in the post-smartphone era. If the project is successful, Vietnam could become the world’s first assembly site for groundbreaking AI devices.
