AIMO (Asia International Mathematical Olympiad) was founded by the Asian Mathematical Olympiad Committee in 2012 and is one of the most prestigious English-language Math competitions in the region, with the participation of more than 20 countries and territories. Every year, over 150,000 students compete in this arena, thereby conquering thinking challenges, training their abilities and opening the door to integration.
Vietnam officially participated in AIMO in 2019. In just 6 years, Vietnamese students have won more than 220 international medals, affirming their increasingly solid position on the Asian intellectual map.
Journalist Phung Cong Suong - Editor-in-Chief of Tien Phong Newspaper, Head of the AIMO Organizing Committee for the 2025-2026 school year said: "AIMO is a prestigious international mathematics playground, a prestigious international mathematics award in the Asia region that Vietnam participated in and quickly made its mark with many achievements. The special feature of the exam is that candidates do math in English, helping them access global knowledge and practice their integration skills. AIMO strongly attracts the student community thanks to its wide reach and subjects ranging from grades 2 to 12. The excellent achievements of the Vietnamese delegation in the international round in recent years are also a motivation for more and more students to participate."
The organization scale ranges from Regional level (North - Central - South) to National and International level. AIMO for the 2025-2026 school year for students from grades 2 to 12 is implemented according to a four-level interconnected roadmap, ensuring both open participation opportunities and screening of outstanding factors.
The first step of the roadmap is the Preliminary Round, which will be held online on AIMO Vietnam's technology platform, nationwide from November 2025 to December 2025, divided into 3 rounds. Each candidate can only take the exam once. Applying online technology helps AIMO remove geographical barriers, creating equal opportunities for all students across the country to access international standard exams.
Candidates with high scores will be selected to continue to the Regional round held in March 2026 in 3 regions North - Central - South in a direct form. This is the stage that not only tests math problem-solving ability but also trains exam manners, writing skills and concentration - important factors when taking national and international exams. The results of this round will determine the typical representatives to participate in the national final.
The national final round is expected to take place before April 20, 2026, held in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with the exam entirely in English. This is also the place to honor the best candidates of the season, and at the same time select the team representing Vietnam to participate in the international final. The destination of the roadmap is the AIMO 2026 International Final, held from August 1-5, 2026. The venue will be announced by the International AIMO Organization. Candidates will take the test on paper, with the exam entirely in English.
In the national and international finals, the best candidates will be honored with Gold, Silver, Bronze medals and certificates according to international standards, and have the opportunity to receive scholarships, awards, and educational gifts from the Organizing Committee or accompanying units to encourage learning spirit. In particular, excellent candidates will have the opportunity to join the AIMO Vietnam team - an enlightening experience, opening the journey to conquer international knowledge for any student who loves Math.
