Previously, patient Huynh Tan Thanh (33 years old) came to Da Nang Oncology Hospital for examination with a mass in the left supraclavicular region, which was soft to the touch and had limited mobility. Ultrasound showed a hypoechoic lesion measuring approximately 32x21mm, which was difficult to separate from the adjacent brachial plexus. In addition, on the contrast-enhanced MRI image, the left subclavian soft tissue tumor had a “rat tail” sign, characteristic of a benign schwannoma.
Recognizing that this was a benign tumor but located in a difficult position, the team of doctors from the General Oncology Department performed a meticulous dissection and separated the nerve branches from the tumor. This allowed the doctors to completely remove the tumor while still preserving all the nerve branches that control the movement and sensation of the arm. After surgery, the patient was awake, the left arm moved normally, and there was no weakness or sensory disturbance.

Dr. Dang Nguyen Kha, who directly performed the surgery, said that cervical nerve sheath tumors are rare diseases that often develop silently and are difficult to detect early. With the characteristic of being located near many important structures, accurate diagnosis along with modern equipment and high technical expertise play a decisive role, helping patients to be treated thoroughly and preserve important functions.
Dr. Kha recommends not to be subjective with tumors, goiters in the neck or shoulder area, especially when the tumor appears with numbness, pain, or limited hand movement. Early examination and correct diagnosis of the cause helps detect lesions early, avoiding the risk of tumor growth causing nerve compression, making surgery complicated and potentially causing complications.
