Rodri: "Spanish player deserves the Golden Ball"

"Spanish football deserves a FIFA Ballon d'Or winner," midfielder Rodri said after Spain's 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final on July 15.

Following his impressive performance that helped Spain win their fourth European Championship title in history, midfielder Rodri was awarded the title of Best Player of the Tournament. The Manchester City midfielder played in six of Spain's seven matches, scoring one goal and boasting a pass accuracy rate of 92.84%.

Coach Luis de la Fuente heaped praise on Rodri's performance, stating: "For me, Rodri is the best player in the world ; please give him the Ballon d'Or right now."

However, when asked by reporters about his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, Rodri said: "To be honest, I would like a Spaniard to win this award, I don't care who it is."

I think Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal fully deserves it. Personally, I am very proud of what I am doing and the award I have been given.

But winning the Ballon d'Or depends on people's opinions. As for me, I'm here to win Euro 2024."

The Manchester City midfielder added: "The Spanish national team overcame an incredibly difficult tournament. Spain had the character to cope, which is why we became champions. The whole team will not stop here."

Spanish right-back Dani Carvajal (who previously won the Champions League and La Liga with Real Madrid) also agreed with Rodri's view, saying: "I hope a Spaniard will win the Ballon d'Or."

I think Spanish football deserves this award. I would love for it to happen.

I think I could be among the candidates not only for the titles I've won this year but also for my performance. But this award, in fact, is not something I dreamed of winning."

In the history of Spanish football, only the late Barcelona legend Luis Suarez has ever won the Ballon d'Or, in 1960.
