A group of students printed products from a plastic recycling machine.
The first product from the plastic recycling machine of two students Nguyen Quoc An, class 12A3 and Dang Trang Nhat Vy, class 10A8 are colorful cup holders currently used in the canteen of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted.
Nguyen Quoc An shared: “Realizing that plastic waste has a huge impact on the environment, we came up with the idea of creating a recycling machine to process used plastic bottles. Currently, the machine can only process PET plastic and defective printed products, and excess materials from 3D printing technology. The group hopes to upgrade the recycling machine, combine many technologies to produce more aesthetic products, and at the same time spread to schools the motivation to innovate many solutions towards environmental protection.”
The machine operates effectively, students in the school enthusiastically bring plastic bottles, collect waste plastic from the 3D printer to the processing group. Plastic waste is crushed, melted and pressed into molds that can create objects used in daily life. Dang Trang Nhat Vy said that the cost of making the recycling machine is low, easy to install and maintain. By recycling or reusing waste plastic, not only does it reduce the amount of plastic waste but it also helps educate students about environmental protection and sustainable use of resources.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Vice Principal of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted, who directly guided the group of authors in making the recycling machine, said that the group of students collected documents on 3D printed plastic, researched current recycling methods and processing technology... Initially, the operation of cutting plastic and pressing plastic into the frame continuously failed, but the students persisted in finding the cause and fixing it. In addition to contributing to environmental protection, the plastic recycling machine also promises to bring economic "profit". The processed plastic pellets can be sold on the market at a higher price than plastic bottles and untreated plastic waste.
The plastic recycling machine is not the first highly applicable scientific and technical innovation of students at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted. In recent times, many students of the school have implemented many interesting creative ideas. In 2024, the solution of the System for reporting and detecting people trapped in apartment fires by students Lam Bao Tran and Lam Hung Vi received much attention due to its practical applicability, certified by the provincial fire prevention and fighting agency.
When students conduct scientific and technical research, the school will support them with facilities to help them carry out their projects. At the same time, the instructors will closely monitor the progress of the project to encourage, motivate and support. From the fact that many students are passionate about scientific research, the Board of Directors of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted has established a scientific research team with nearly 50 members, operating for more than 8 years, directly guided and oriented by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong on research topics.
“Almost all solutions and projects implemented by students are effective. That success is due to the students working with a spirit of team spirit. In recent years, participating in provincial and national science and technology innovation competitions, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted has often had solutions and projects that won high awards, bringing pride to the school and motivating the school to continue promoting and developing scientific and technical research activities for students,” informed Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong.
