Thanks to the cultivation of high-value economic crops, including durian, the economy of households in Phuoc Binh commune has steadily improved, opening up new business opportunities for farmers.

Following the directions of the agricultural officials of Phuoc Binh commune, we visited the nearly 4-hectare durian orchard of Mr. Pi Nang Phien's family in Gia E village.

Mr. Phiên said: "During my field trip to observe durian cultivation models in Khánh Sơn, I found that growing durian trees yields much higher economic returns than many other crops. Furthermore, the natural conditions and soil are also suitable for this type of crop."

Therefore, I decided to abandon cashew cultivation and invest over 100 million VND to improve the land, dig a water reservoir, buy machinery, a drip irrigation system, and durian seedlings to plant.

After more than 5 years of cultivation, the 2 hectares have now yielded their first harvest of sweet fruit, selling at 70,000 VND/kg, bringing in over 150 million VND in revenue, which has made the family very happy.

Thanks to the mild climate conditions, the durian orchard of Mr. Trinh Quoc Tuan's family in Phuoc Binh commune, Bac Ai district, Ninh Thuan province is thriving.

Not far from there, the nearly 3-hectare durian orchard of farmer Trinh Quoc Tuan in Bac Ray 1 village also brings a high income to his family.

Mr. Tuan shared: "My family is currently cultivating nearly 3 hectares of Monthong durian. Thanks to the suitable soil and climate conditions in Phuoc Binh commune, the quality is not inferior to other places. The durian has yellow flesh and a sweet, refreshing taste, so it is very popular with consumers."

Although they were only planted 4 years ago, each tree yields an average of nearly 60kg of fruit. The fruit is large and uniform, so traders buy it at a uniform price of 80,000 VND/kg.

During the first durian harvest of the season, the family earned nearly 1 billion VND from 12 tons. Currently, the entire orchard still has about 3-5 tons that have been pre-ordered by traders, awaiting harvest.

Thanks to the mild and temperate climate, durian trees are very suitable for cultivation in Phuoc Binh commune; however, the initial investment is very high, about 100 million VND/hectare, and it takes 4-5 years before harvest.

Therefore, some households are now investing in planting trees using a long-term strategy, initially planting 10-20 trees and then gradually expanding the planted area.

According to statistics, the entire commune has now developed 105 hectares of durian, mainly Ri6 and Monthong varieties, of which over 60 hectares are in the harvesting stage.

The average yield per durian tree is nearly 100 kg of fruit. With wholesale durian prices ranging from 45,000-55,000 VND/kg for Ri6 durian variety and 70,000-80,000 VND/kg for Monthong durian variety, this has brought high economic efficiency to growers.

Comrade Katơr Thị Gái, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phước Bình commune, Bác Ái district (Ninh Thuận province), said: Durian trees are very suitable for the local climate and soil conditions.

Compared to other crops, durian yields high economic returns with an average selling price of 50,000-100,000 VND/kg when harvested directly from the orchard, thus providing households with a stable income.

In the coming period, the locality will continue to encourage farmers to expand the area planted with durian, coordinating with all levels and sectors to disseminate information and provide guidance on planting and caring techniques to the people.

In addition, we will continue to promote the establishment of cooperative groups for cultivating durian in a safe manner for export and to serve community tourism activities in the locality.
