This is a wedding that took place more than 400 years ago, demonstrating beautiful love, starting the diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and Japan.
According to legend, merchant Araki Sotaro was originally a samurai. In 1588, he came to Nagasaki and started a trading career, gradually becoming the leader of Japanese businessmen.
Around the early 17th century, Araki Sotaro came to do business in Hoi An and won the affection of Princess Ngoc Hoa (full name Nguyen Phuc Ngoc Hoa, adopted daughter of Lord Sai Nguyen Phuc Nguyen).
In 1619, Lord Sai agreed to marry Princess Ngoc Hoa to Araki Sotaro, with the hope of building a long-term good relationship with Japanese merchants. Afterwards, Mr. Araki Sotaro was granted the nationality and Vietnamese name Nguyen Hien Hung by Lord Sai.
In 1620, Princess Ngoc Hoa followed her husband to live in Nagasaki province (Japan). When she returned to live in Japan, the princess taught Annamese dances to the Japanese; at the same time, she contributed to charity work, built Buddhist temples...
In 1635, after her husband died, she continued to help many merchants in Nagasaki, promoting good relations with Lord Nguyen in Dang Trong. Currently, the Nagasaki Museum of Art still displays Princess Ngoc Hoa's mirror.
Tourists are delighted to witness traditional Japanese dances right in the middle of Hoi An ancient town.
The love story between Princess Ngoc Hoa and Araki Sotaro is the inspiration for the people of Nagasaki to build it into a part of the Okunchi festival which takes place in early October every year.
