Why was the Iraqi player sent off?

VnExpressVnExpress30/01/2024

Qatar referees sent off Aymen Hussein under FIFA Law 12 after his goal celebration in Iraq's 2-3 defeat to Jordan in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup.

In the 76th minute, after putting Iraq 2-1 up in the match at the Khalifa International Stadium on the evening of January 29th, Hussein ran towards the stands where many home fans were gathered to celebrate by grabbing food with his hands.

According to Sport Star , this gesture was meant to mock a similar celebration by Jordanian players after scoring the opening goal at the end of the first half. Jordanians typically eat mansaf – a dish made from lamb and eggs – with their hands.

After returning from the pitch, Hussein sat down and performed the mansaf gesture once more, while his teammates had finished celebrating. Immediately afterwards, referee Alizera Faghani ran over and showed the Iraqi striker a second yellow card, sending him off. Hussein had already received a yellow card in the 45+3 minute.

According to Sport Star , the referee sent Hussein off based on FIFA Law 12, which stipulates that players are not allowed to celebrate excessively and waste time. Players are also penalized with a yellow card for other celebratory offenses, such as: making provocative, mocking, or inciting gestures; climbing fences to celebrate a goal; removing or covering their heads with shirts; covering their heads or faces with masks or similar objects.

Some argue that Hussein was punished for using his left hand to pick up food. In some Islamic countries, the left hand is considered unclean. However, in fact, among the Jordanian players celebrating the opening goal, some also used their left hands.

Iraq takes the lead 2-1.

Hussein scored and received a second yellow card for celebrating for too long.

Iraq paid a heavy price for Hussein's red card, with all their substitutions already used. In quick succession, in the fifth and seventh minutes of added time, Al Arab and Al Rashdan scored to give Jordan a 3-2 comeback victory, securing their place in the quarter-finals against Tajikistan.

For Iraq, this was a surprising defeat after topping Group D with a perfect record against Indonesia, Japan, and Vietnam. Meanwhile, Jordan only qualified for the Round of 16 as the third-placed team in Group E, behind Bahrain and South Korea.

Hussein currently leads the race for the 2024 Asian Cup Golden Boot with six goals. Second-placed Akram Afif (Qatar) has four goals, while Ayase Ueda (Japan), Lee Kang-in (South Korea), and Oday Dabbagh (Palestine) all have three goals.
