According to CBS News , the crash site is a popular tourist area that is usually bustling during the early hours of New Year's.
The incident occurred at 3:15 a.m. local time, near the end of New Orleans' New Year's Eve celebrations and hours before the Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal game held at the city's Superdome that is expected to draw thousands of people.
Witnesses said a truck drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street at high speed, then the driver got out and started shooting, prompting police to return fire.
Police officials described the incident as a “deliberate act” that was not drunk driving and that the attacker had shown a clear intention to “cause carnage”. Two officers were shot by the driver but are in stable condition.
Ms. LaToya Cantrell - Mayor of New Orleans in the US state of Louisiana - affirmed that this car crash was a "terrorist attack".
Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's New Orleans Field Office, said the agency is investigating the discovery of at least one suspected homemade explosive device at the scene.
The FBI released a statement saying that the perpetrator of the car crash was a US citizen named Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42 years old. The agency found weapons, explosives and a flag of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in the car - a rented Ford. The FBI is identifying possible accomplices of Din Jabbar.
Many US cities and localities have now adopted enhanced security measures for public activities to guard against similar acts.
