Increase health insurance coverage for students

According to statistics from Lai Chau Provincial Social Insurance, in the 2024-2025 school year, the whole province has more than 230 educational institutions with 113,744 students who are required to participate in health insurance. Of which, 105,386 students have participated, reaching 92.65%. Specifically, 29,034 students participate in the student group and 76,352 students participate in other groups such as: poor households, near-poor households, children under 6 years old, ethnic minorities in difficult areas, but there are still 8,358 students (accounting for 7.35%) who have not participated in health insurance. Entering the 2025-2026 school year, students in the province only have to pay 631,800 VND/year to participate in health insurance. This level is equal to 50% of the total health insurance premium of VND 1,263,600/year, thanks to support from the State budget according to Decree No. 158/2020/ND-CP, increasing the support level from 30% to 50%. Compared to the 2024 - 2025 school year, the health insurance premium is significantly reduced, helping to reduce the financial burden on parents and encourage children to participate in health insurance for the whole year.
Ms. Vu Thi Hoai Guong - Deputy Director of the Provincial Social Insurance said: "Increasing the rate of health insurance participation for students in Lai Chau is of great significance. When the health insurance coverage rate increases, the health care benefits of students are guaranteed, reducing the financial burden on families and helping parents feel secure in taking care of their children's education. At the same time, this policy helps students form the habit of taking care of their health early, contributing to their comprehensive physical and mental development. The cooperation of the Provincial People's Committee, the Ministry of Finance and the Social Insurance creates a safe and healthy educational environment and affirms the humanistic value of social security policies."
To achieve the goal of 100% of students participating in health insurance in the 2025-2026 school year, the strong cooperation of the entire political system is needed. A number of key solutions have been set by the province and the Social Insurance sector, which are to strengthen propaganda and mobilization through many channels from conferences, training, direct communication to social networks and grassroots loudspeakers; enhance school responsibility by linking health insurance participation targets with emulation movements, and homeroom teachers closely following the student list. At the same time, speed up the collection and issuance of cards to avoid interruption of benefits; transparently use primary health care funds; ensure a mechanism to support the contribution portion for poor and near-poor students.
Health insurance for students is not only an insurance card but also a guarantee of health, faith and hope for future generations. When students are in good health, they will have the conditions to study, practice, and become quality human resources, contributing to the development of Lai Chau province. Mr. Vu Tien Hoa - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training commented: "In recent years, with the attention of the Party and the State, the active coordination of departments and branches, the rate of participation in health insurance at schools has achieved very positive results. Thereby, creating a solid foundation for the comprehensive development of students in the area".
In fact, many families have significantly reduced the burden of medical expenses when their children are unfortunately sick and have to go to the doctor. The health insurance card not only helps to share direct costs but also brings peace of mind, creating conditions for children to concentrate on studying and practicing. Parents also clearly feel the benefits of the policy. Ms. Vui Thi Hong in Mang village (Doan Ket ward) shared: "Last year, my nephew had appendicitis, the surgery cost was 12 million VND but the health insurance supported about 10 million VND. Thanks to the new support level, paying health insurance for children this year is much easier." With such flexibility and convenience, health insurance has truly become a solid support to help tens of thousands of students in the province receive comprehensive health care.
In order for students and parents to better understand the superiority of health insurance, propaganda work is always focused on. According to teacher Le The Hoai - Principal of Quyet Thang Secondary School (Doan Ket Ward), the current rate of students participating in health insurance is over 80%. In the new school year, thanks to the support level increased to 50%, the school expects to reach 100% of students participating. The school will continue to propagate and guide parents and students to register in a timely manner, ensuring that all students have health insurance cards.
