Ensuring production efficiency
According to the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City, in 2025, the whole city plans to produce rice on an area of 685,404 hectares, with an expected output of 4,431,669 tons. Of which, the winter-spring crop will produce an area of 313,960 hectares, with an output of 2,219,360 tons; the summer-autumn crop will produce an area of 282,177 hectares, with an output of 1,744,377 tons; the autumn-winter crop will produce an area of 89,267 hectares, with an output of 467,932 tons.
Autumn-winter rice is concentrated in production and grows well in the fields in the Bac Cai San area, Can Tho city.
Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu, Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City, commented: “In the recent rice crops (winter-spring and summer-autumn), farmers in Can Tho City have achieved high results. That is thanks to the close attention and direction of the city, especially the local agricultural sector, the coordination of functional departments and localities in directing the implementation of production plan targets, disease prevention and control, mobilizing farmers to sow concentrated rice to avoid planthoppers; the close and sensitive direction of the agricultural sector, especially the capacity of the management team, scientific and technical staff, contributing to improving productivity, quality, production efficiency, organizing pest prevention and control in the direction of ecological safety. Farmers also actively cooperate in applying scientific and technical advances, 3 reductions 3 increases, 1 must 5 reductions, production using biological products, using organic fertilizers from straw... so production costs are reduced, productivity is high and profits are brought. stable".
As of July 16, 2025, Can Tho City farmers have planted 684,628 hectares of rice, reaching 99.89% of the plan. 435,505 hectares have been harvested, with an estimated yield of 69.27 quintals/ha. The estimated output is 3,017,044 tons, reaching 68.08% of the plan. Of which, the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop has been planted on 327,450 hectares, reaching 104.30% of the plan, with a yield of 71.74 quintals/ha, and an output of 2,349,158 tons. The 2025 summer-autumn rice crop has been completely planted on 284,320 hectares, reaching 100.76% of the plan; Up to now, 108,055 hectares have been harvested, with an estimated yield of 62 quintals/ha, output of 667,886 tons, reaching 38.29% of the plan, in which the main rice varieties such as OM 5451, OM 18, Dai Thom 8, ST24... are focused on production. The 2025 autumn-winter rice and summer-autumn rice have been planted on 72,858 hectares, reaching 81.6% of the plan; the main production varieties such as OM 5451, OM 18, Dai Thom 8, ST24... are currently developing well.
According to the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City, since the beginning of the year, localities in the city have formed and built production and product consumption linkage areas according to large fields. Every crop, the city's Department of Agriculture maintains and implements the large field model with an area of 84,819 hectares. Farmers participating in the model are trained in production technical advances right from the beginning of the crop and linked to product consumption. Currently, over 30% of the area is contracted by companies and enterprises to consume products.
Multiple production protection solutions
Since the beginning of 2025, rice production in the whole city has also faced many disadvantages due to natural disasters. Typically, rice production was affected by high tides in the first months of 2025, of which 1,145.82 hectares of newly planted rice in the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop were flooded in Long My and Vi Thuy communes (833.06 hectares were damaged by 30%, 121.92 hectares were damaged by 30-70%, and 190.84 hectares were damaged by over 70%).
In addition, rice prices also decreased compared to the same period in 2024, affecting farmers' profits. Specifically, the winter-spring rice crop of 2024-2025 has a production cost of about 3,658 VND/kg, while the price of rice at harvest time ranges from 5,000-10,300 VND/kg (depending on the rice variety), down 12-48% compared to the winter-spring crop of 2023-2024. Fresh rice prices decreased, farmers only achieved a profit of 27-64% compared to the cost. Summer-autumn rice began to be harvested from the end of May, the price of fresh rice in the crop ranged from 5,500-8,200 VND/kg, down 9-32% compared to the same period in 2024. The current price of fresh rice such as Dai Thom 8 is from 6,000-6,200 VND/kg, OM 18 is from 6,000-6,200 VND/kg, OM 5451 is from 5,500-5,800 VND/kg, ST24 is from 7,800-8,200 VND/kg... Rice prices are lower than the same period in 2024, farmers do not earn high profits.
Currently, many localities still have unharvested summer-autumn rice areas, and have sown autumn-winter rice. Faced with complicated weather and storms, the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City has requested local authorities and specialized agencies to implement a number of rice protection measures.
Accordingly, for rice in the panicle stage, it is necessary to pay attention to fertilizing the panicle at the right time when the panicle has just emerged from 1-2mm. Provide enough nitrogen and potassium nutrients for the plant to differentiate panicles to create many branches and rice flowers. Rice in the panicle stage needs to be watered into the field and kept 3-5cm deep for the rice to bloom quickly, evenly and firmly, no need to fertilize at this stage when fertilizing is provided fully and promptly in the seedling, tillering and panicle welcoming stages. Farmers are advised to proactively reinforce the dykes, monitor the water supply for production, contact cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmers to arrange pumps to drain water and promptly overcome local flooding, actively contact machinery and transportation services during the concentrated harvest period, avoid being affected by stormy weather and being passive in the preparation of machinery, harvesting late compared to maturity will increase the rate of post-harvest loss and reduce rice quality.
The Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City said that from now until the end of the year, the rice production area will be planted with an additional 16,409 hectares, contributing to reaching 102.2% of the yearly plan. Of which, there are 10,000 hectares of winter-spring rice in Hoa Tu, Gia Hoa, Vinh Hai, Ngoc To communes and the 2025 autumn-winter rice area concentrated in communes that have not yet been planted. The estimated total rice output in 2025 is 4,602,911 tons, reaching 103.9% of the plan.
In addition, in the last months of 2025, the Can Tho City Department of Agriculture will focus resources on the task of investigating and forecasting plant pests and diseases and guiding farmers and cooperatives on green production and food safety; develop a plan to continue implementing assigned plans and tasks, especially focusing on developing a plan to effectively implement the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice and managing growing area codes and packaging facility codes to meet the requirements of exporting countries...
Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu said that technical staff of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Can Tho City will also focus on implementing a number of solutions in the coming time such as organizing operations, closely monitoring the sowing situation, investigating and forecasting pests, instructing farmers on prevention and control measures and evaluating effectiveness in the direction of ecological safety. Strengthening information and propaganda work on seasons and rice varieties to effectively manage diseases, especially brown planthoppers and onion mosquitoes. Focusing local resources on promoting propaganda and training for farmers on the use of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides according to the "4 rights" principle, to ensure production efficiency for farmers. Strengthening inspection of production and trading establishments of plant varieties, fertilizers and pesticides to prevent fake and poor quality plant varieties, pesticides and fertilizers and strictly handling violations.
