The effectiveness of purple-green rice cultivation linkage

In the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop, most rice varieties, including regular rice, light fragrant rice, specialty rice, and high-yield rice, have seen sharp price drops due to market factors. Specifically, the Philippines - Vietnam's major rice import market, has temporarily suspended imports. However, there is an "exception": the purple-green rice variety cultivated by Tan Hung Phu Agricultural Cooperative (HTX) in Tan Thanh Commune (Can Tho City) is linked to output consumption with high selling prices.

Purple rice has purple color, light aroma, soft and sticky rice.

The new purple-green rice variety is cultivated by Tan Hung Phu Agricultural Cooperative in the summer-autumn crop of 2025. Although it is a new rice variety, the rice yield is quite good, averaging 5.8-6.7 tons/ha. The rice is easy to grow, requires little care, and is especially not susceptible to diseases or pests at most growth stages.

Mr. Le Thanh Vu, a member of Tan Hung Phu Agricultural Cooperative, shared: "For many years, I have only cultivated specialty rice varieties, because specialty varieties bring good income. However, in the recent summer-autumn rice crop, when a company came to cooperate with the cooperative to let members try cultivating purple-green rice and guarantee the output, I boldly asked to participate and use the seeds provided by the company to plant on the entire 18ha of rice of my family. The rice was harvested after about 105 days of sowing, with a rice yield of 6 tons/ha, a total rice output of 108 tons, the company's purchase price was 8,300 VND/kg, 2,000-3,000 VND/kg higher than the price of some light-fragrant varieties, excluding costs, the profit was more than 50 million VND/ha. Through one crop of purple-green rice, I realized that the rice is very easy to care for, with low investment costs for the crop, because it is not attacked by pests or diseases. I apply organic rice farming so the rice after harvest ensures food safety and hygiene standards of the purchasing unit.

When young, the purple-green rice plant has a green stem like other rice varieties, but when the rice forms panicles and flowers, the rice grains turn purple.

Also a member of the cooperative and participating in the association of purple-green rice cultivation, Mr. Bui Huu Tinh confided: "I have 10 hectares of rice cultivation. In the summer-autumn rice crop, I planted 8 hectares of purple-green rice, and in the remaining 2 hectares, I planted OM18 rice. Purple-green rice has a better price after harvest because there is a unit that guarantees the output at 8,300 VND/kg, the yield is 6.5 tons/ha; while OM18 rice has a price drop so it is only 5,600 VND/kg, the yield is 6 tons/ha, after deducting the investment cost of the crop, the profit from purple-green rice is about 50 million VND/ha, and the profit from the OM18 rice growing area is about 20 million VND/ha. According to calculations, the investment cost for the whole purple-green rice cultivation season is only 12 million VND/ha, a decrease of 1.2-1.5 million VND/ha compared to the cost of cultivating some light fragrant rice varieties".

Mr. Ho Thanh Nam, a member of Tan Hung Phu Agricultural Cooperative, also participates in cultivating purple-green rice on an area of ​​20 hectares, with a rice yield of 6.5 tons/hectare, a total rice output of 130 tons, a selling price of 8,300 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit is nearly 60 million VND/hectare.

“In the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop alone, the Cooperative has cooperated to cultivate purple-green rice on an area of ​​800 hectares, with a purchase price of 8,300 VND/kg, higher than some other rice varieties in the summer-autumn crop, from 1,500-3,000 VND/kg. In the 2025-2026 winter-spring rice crop, the company will continue to cooperate in production and purchase of purple-green rice on 1,000 hectares/5,000 hectares of the Cooperative's current area. The floor price for purple-green rice in the 2025-2026 winter-spring rice crop at the Cooperative is 8,000 VND/kg and the purchasing company will adjust the purchase price up when the market price of rice increases at harvest time.

"Initially, the Cooperative also rubbed purple-green rice into 4kg bags to introduce to customers to try and most customers liked it, placing orders to continue using it," informed Mr. Ho Thanh Liem, Director of Tan Hung Phu Agricultural Cooperative.
