RT news agency on November 16 quoted the Russian Defense Ministry's announcement stating that the country's army had carried out a successful attack on three Ukrainian missile launchers, including a US-supplied HIMARS high-mobility rocket artillery system.

Another announcement from the Russian Defense Ministry on the same day said that the country's Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile system, supported by reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), hit two Neptune mobile coastal defense missile systems and one HIMARS of Ukraine in the Dnepropetrovsk region.

The video, shot from a high altitude, shows the vehicles barely visible in an open field. An Iskander missile – which has a range of 500km and a warhead weighing up to 700kg – delivered a direct hit on the Ukrainian asset, creating a massive explosion, a visible shockwave and a fireball.

The HIMARS system, which Washington will supply to Ukraine from June 2022, can fire guided missiles with a range of about 80 km (50 miles) and, in some versions, can fire rockets with a range of up to 150 km (93 miles).

Meanwhile, the Neptune missile developed domestically by Ukraine was originally designed to attack surface ships and has a range of up to 280 km.

On November 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky released a video showing the country's long-range missile "Long Neptune" being launched and hitting targets inside Russian territory at night. This is the first time Kiev has publicly shown images of this weapon system in action.

“Long Neptune of Ukraine. Keep going further,” Mr. Zelensky wrote on Telegram with the video (see below), confirming that Ukrainian forces had attacked specific locations in Russia but did not elaborate.

According to Mr. Zelensky, this is a completely legitimate response to the continuous attacks from Russia. He said that Ukrainian missiles have brought more clear and accurate results almost every month, and thanked the missile development program participants for improvements in range and accuracy.

Kiev recently introduced an upgraded version of the Ukrainian-developed Neptune anti-ship missile – the weapon that was used to sink the Moskva flagship of the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet in April 2022. The upgraded version appeared in a video released by the Zbroya arms manufacturer on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day on August 24, showing it alongside the Bohdana howitzer and various types of unmanned naval weapons.

Ukraine wants to extend the range of its Neptune missiles to create more tactical advantages over Russia.

According to the Militarnyi defense website, the upgraded version’s larger body could extend its range to 1,000 kilometers and increase the size of its warhead. In March, President Zelensky also said the upgraded Neptune missile would be able to strike targets at a distance of 1,000 kilometers – a significant increase from the 300 kilometers range of the original model, according to 2020 documentation.

The upgraded version was used by Ukraine in an attack on the Russian naval port of Novorossiysk in May, traveling more than 750km – one of Kiev’s longest-range conventional missile strikes since the conflict began in 2022.

Militarnyi said the new system could be equipped with a warhead with more explosives, a harder penetrator or an improved guidance system. The 2023 upgrade plan mentioned adding an infrared sensor or a self-homing mechanism for the terminal attack phase. At that time, there was also a proposal to increase the warhead weight from 150 kg to 350 kg, but the actual weight of the final version has not been announced.
