Thailand aims to be in the “Top 5” world destinations for medical tourism

To achieve the goal of being in the “Top 5” leading destinations in the world for medical tourism, relevant agencies of Thailand are actively and resolutely implementing many solutions at the same time to make this goal soon become a reality. The Thai Ministry of Health said that in recent years, the country has strongly developed medical infrastructure, increased the participation of private hospitals and spa facilities, and built the image of herbal cities to introduce health tourism destinations.

In parallel with the above measures, Thailand has also implemented promotional campaigns with incentives such as extending visa validity to 90 days for customers from certain countries. At the same time, it has coordinated the activities of state agencies with private healthcare facilities to improve service standards and save costs. In addition, Thailand has also approved guidelines to develop the Andaman Health Corridor following the model of advanced healthcare in the world, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of healthcare tourism in the four provinces along the Andaman Sea, including Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga and Ranong. The development of healthcare models will be carried out using green medicine and creative economy , to improve healthcare programs and medical tourism. In addition, Thailand also focuses on specialized training in the medical field to produce more doctors who can meet higher requirements.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the five largest and most potential medical tourism markets for Thailand are China, Kuwait, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Japan. It is expected that medical tourism could bring in 25 billion baht (about 715 million USD) in revenue for Thailand this year. Officials of the Medical Tourism Association said that Thailand was one of the most popular medical tourism destinations in the world last year. Officials of the association said that factors that made Thailand a popular destination for tourists include high standards of medical care, quality treatments, reasonable costs, and affordable living costs. According to a survey, foreign medical tourists spent an average of 35,000 baht (more than 1,000 USD) on treatments in Thailand last year.

Obviously, medical tourism, also known as medical tourism, is not a new topic but is still receiving constant attention. Tourists do not only travel for sightseeing, shopping, and relaxation but also for medical treatment. Therefore, medical tourism has become one of the six future tourism development trends. This is a form of tourism in which people travel to another country with the main purpose of receiving health care services.

Another Southeast Asian country is Malaysia, which welcomed a record number of international visitors for medical examination and treatment in 2018. With an average annual growth rate of double digits, medical tourism is the fastest growing sector of the Malaysian tourism industry. In addition to Malaysia and Thailand, another Southeast Asian country that cannot be ignored when talking about medical tourism is Singapore. This island nation is also one of the top destinations for medical tourism in the world. Perfect service, modern equipment, especially the skills of the medical team and doctors are the strengths that help Singapore always be the top choice for medical tourism in the region and the world.
