Asian stock markets traded mixed in the afternoon session of November 17. Concerns that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will not cut interest rates as expected in December 2025, along with worries about a technology “bubble”, continued to affect investor sentiment.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index fell 0.1% to close at 50,323.91 points. In Hong Kong (China), the Hang Seng index fell 0.7% to 26,384.28 points. In Shanghai, the Composite index fell 0.5% to 3,972.03 points. The Singapore stock market also fell, while Seoul, Manila, Bangkok, Wellington and Taipei (China) gained points. The Sydney and Frankfurt markets remained stable.

The gloom on stock exchanges also affected cryptocurrencies, causing bitcoin to at one point lose all of its gains this year, just a month after hitting a record high.

Traders are watching reports on jobs and inflation, which were delayed by the record US government shutdown that ended last week.

All eyes are now on earnings from the giant Nvidia this week, which just became the first company to be valued at $5 trillion. Nvidia has played a key role in the development of artificial intelligence, but now faces concerns about its high valuation in the industry, said Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index.

In Vietnam, at the end of the session on November 17, the VN Index increased by 18.96 points (1.16%), to 1,654.42 points; the HNX-Index increased by 1.08 points (0.4%), to 268.69 points.
