German Chancellor does not want to be trusted, paving the way for early elections

(CLO) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called a vote of confidence after his coalition government collapsed.

Notably, according to German media, Chancellor Scholz is expected to call on the German Parliament to declare no confidence in him on Monday, marking the first official step towards holding early elections.

The departure of the Free Democrats (FDP) from the three-party coalition last month left Mr Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens in power without a majority in the German parliament, at a time when Germany is facing a severe economic crisis.

"If lawmakers agree with my proposal, I will propose to the president to dissolve Parliament," Mr. Scholz told reporters on December 11, after calling for the move.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he would act on the results of Monday's vote and had reached a consensus with parliamentary parties on holding early elections on February 23.

If the no-confidence vote passes, Chancellor Scholz and his ministers will remain in office until a new government is formed, a process that could take months if coalition talks drag on.

The outcome of the vote remains uncertain, with Mr Scholz's SPD party likely to vote in his favour, while the conservative opposition, which is leading in the polls, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) are expected to abstain.
