Salty food
Nutrition expert Ro Huntriss (currently working in the UK) says that eating too much salty food during menstruation can cause bloating and gas. This is because the body retains more sodium, leading to water retention, according to the Daily Mail .
During your period, you should choose fresh, whole foods and season your meals with herbs and spices instead of salt to help reduce water retention.

Sweets
Eating foods high in refined sugar can cause blood sugar levels to spike. This can worsen mood swings, fatigue, and irritability commonly experienced during menstruation.
A study published in 2018 in the journal BMC Women's Health indicated that women who regularly eat sugary snacks tend to experience more menstrual cramps compared to those who eat less.
Nutrition expert Sophie Dillon (currently working in the UK) says that replacing sugary sweets with fruit, as well as maintaining a balance of protein and fiber in meals, will help stabilize mood.
Caffeine
During menstruation, when hormonal fluctuations occur, consuming caffeinated beverages such as coffee and strong tea can exacerbate symptoms like breast tenderness, irritability, and sleep disturbances, as well as negatively impact mental health due to increased anxiety.
Expert Dillon suggests that switching to decaffeinated herbal teas or reducing caffeine intake may help manage these symptoms better.
Ale
Alcoholic beverages can make you feel bloated. They can also worsen gas and disrupt your mood.
"If you find yourself more emotionally sensitive during your period, you should look for a non-alcoholic alternative to prevent the situation from worsening," says expert Huntriss.
