News of exceptionally large floods on rivers in Hue City, likely to exceed historical peak in 2020

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has just issued a bulletin about exceptionally large floods on rivers in Hue City and an urgent flood bulletin about rivers in Da Nang City.

Currently, floods on the Huong River (Hue City), Vu Gia - Thu Bon River ( Da Nang City) are rising; rivers in Southern Quang Tri, Quang Ngai and Gia Lai are fluctuating.

The water level at 7:00 a.m. on October 27 on the Bo River ( Hue City) at Phu Oc station was 4.52m, 0.02m above alert level 3 (BĐ3); on the Huong River (Hue City) at Kim Long station was 3.58m, 0.08m above BĐ3; on the Vu Gia River (Da Nang City) at Ai Nghia station was 9.01m, at BĐ3; on the Thu Bon River (Da Nang City) at Nong Son station was 16.42m, 1.42m above BĐ3; at Cau Lau station was 3.71m, 0.29m below BĐ3.

Forecast for the next 6 hours, floods on rivers in Hue city continue to rise rapidly, at Phu Oc station it is likely to rise above the historical level (5.24m in 2020) by 0.05 - 0.1m; at Kim Long station it will rise above level 3 by 1.10m; on Vu Gia river at Ai Nghia station it will continue to rise and be above level 3.

In the next 12 hours, floods on rivers in Hue city at Phu Oc station will continue to rise slowly and remain above historical levels by 0.05 - 0.10m; at Kim Long station, they will continue to rise and be above BĐ3 by 1.20m and below historical levels by 1.11m; on Thu Bon river at Cau Lau station, they will continue to rise and be above BĐ3; on Vu Gia river at Ai Nghia station, they will fluctuate at a high level above BĐ3.

In the next 12-24 hours, flood levels on rivers in Hue city will decrease and be above level 3; on Thu Bon river at Cau Lau station will decrease and be below level 3; on Vu Gia river at Ai Nghia station will continue to decrease and be above level 2.

From now until October 29, a flood will appear on rivers from Quang Ngai to Gia Lai . During this flood, the peak water level on Tra Khuc River and Ve River (Quang Ngai) will rise to level BĐ1-BĐ2, in some places above BĐ2; the upper reaches of Kon River and some small rivers and streams in Gia Lai, and rivers in Southern Quang Tri will rise to level BĐ1-BĐ2.

There is a high risk of widespread flooding in Hue City and Da Nang City. There is a high risk of flash floods on rivers and streams and landslides on slopes in provinces from Quang Tri South to Gia Lai.

The meteorological agency also issued a warning of heavy rain in the central region.

Specifically, last night and this morning (October 27), from South Quang Tri to Da Nang City and the East of the provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, there was heavy rain. The Central Highlands, Khanh Hoa, the East of Lam Dong Province and the South had rain, moderate rain, and locally heavy rain to very heavy rain. The rainfall from 7:00 p.m. on October 26 to 8:00 a.m. on October 27 was over 250mm in some places, such as: Bach Ma Peak Station (Hue City) 936.8mm; Phuoc Ninh Station (Da Nang City) 275mm...

From October 27 to early morning of October 29, South Quang Tri to Da Nang city and East of Quang Ngai province heavy to very heavy rain with common rainfall in South Quang Tri and East Quang Ngai province 200-400mm, locally over 700mm, Hue city and Da Nang city fluctuate 300-500mm, some places over 800mm. Ha Tinh to North Quang Tri moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, rainfall 100-200mm, some places very heavy rain over 350mm.

From October 27 to early morning of October 28, the East of Gia Lai province will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, with common rainfall of 40-80mm, and locally very heavy rain over 150mm.

Risk of heavy rain, rainfall exceeding 200mm in just 3 hours.

In addition, during the day and night of October 27, the Central Highlands, Khanh Hoa, the eastern part of Dak Lak and Lam Dong provinces and the Southern region will have rain, moderate rain and thunderstorms with rainfall of 20-40mm, in some places heavy to very heavy rain over 100mm. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.

On the day and night of October 29, from Ha Tinh to Da Nang city, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms with rainfall of 50-100mm, in some places very heavy rain over 200mm.

Heavy rains in the area could last until the end of October 2025.
