Mr. Bui Minh Phuong, Director of Product Operations at VNGGames, believes that now is the most opportune time for people to start paying attention to mental health, especially Gen X - a generation that has had many life experiences and career achievements.

Regardless of generation, both mental and physical health are crucial for personal development. Especially in the workplace, where interaction and communication are essential, mental health is sometimes even more important, Mr. Phuong emphasized.

Generation X , comprising those born between approximately 1965 and 1980, grew up amidst significant political , social, and economic upheaval. They witnessed the transformation of technology, from a pre-internet era to a thriving digital age. "Gen X individuals are now mostly approaching their 50s. Unlike other generations, Gen X tends to be more focused on mental health in a more 'quiet' way. They need a space to relax and have calm conversations."

As a Gen X member in the senior management team at VNGGames, Mr. Phuong faces significant work pressure, especially since VNGGames has always been a core business segment of VNG since its early days.

During work, pressure, challenges, or sudden mood swings are completely normal. However, these difficulties help us improve and develop ourselves. The important thing is to listen to our own needs at each moment and be flexible in solving our problems. At the same time, we should also view the problems we encounter more openly by simplifying our thinking. We shouldn't dwell on it, but rather think about how we can do better,” Mr. Phuong shared.

According to Mr. Phuong, as a manager, KPIs are one of the factors that cause him the most pressure during product operation . My main job always involves revenue, so the money-making aspect is always the biggest challenge. Usually, when faced with pressure, I always think positively and look for appropriate solutions. Feeling difficulties or experiencing failures is okay; what's important is that after each failure, we can learn valuable lessons.”

When asked about the importance of mental health in the workplace, Mr. Phuong stated that respect is key to creating a comfortable work environment. At VNG, a culture of respect and individual diversity is always given special attention. I have had the opportunity to interact and work with many Starter colleagues of different ages and nationalities, each with their own unique personality. This diversity has helped me make many new friends, support each other, and overcome difficult times together .”

Furthermore, transparency and fairness in the workplace are also aspects that directly affect the mental health of employees. “ We need to create a healthy work environment: there should be competition, but it needs to be fair competition. Poor mental health in businesses often stems from employees feeling unfairly treated and lacking transparency. At VNG, transparency is clearly demonstrated through the company's leadership team's efforts to connect with, listen to, and answer the questions of our Starters about the company's situation through VNG Connect sessions .”

With its mission of "Human Development," VNG always creates opportunities for its Starters to balance personal and work life. After a stressful workday, VNG employees can participate in physical activities right at the company such as swimming, gym, running, etc., which not only helps everyone improve their health but also enhances interpersonal interaction. After the Covid-19 pandemic, the company continued to diversify working arrangements, allowing employees to register for remote work with appropriate allocation. This helps improve employee morale while still ensuring work efficiency.

From the perspective of someone born in Generation X, Mr. Phuong points out that the biggest challenge for the current generation of young people is correctly understanding and recognizing the importance of mental health.

In my opinion, today's young people are extremely talented and confident. That's great, because they express their likes and dislikes clearly. However, regardless of generation, we all need to listen to our own needs to nurture our mental health. Building a habit of exercising with a favorite sport ; training the intellect; paying attention to a complete and balanced diet; and arranging and balancing time for work, family, and oneself are all necessary actions to help change each person's mental values. Especially, always maintain a positive mindset in life,” Mr. Phuong concluded.

In November 2024, VNG launched the “Inner U” campaign with the message “Embrace the Inner U” (Respect your true feelings), aiming to help employees find balance between work and personal life, thereby building a positive and healthy living and working environment. The Inner U campaign was created with the goal of increasing awareness of the importance of mental health, guiding Starters towards a positive mindset, and changing or eliminating habits that can harm personal emotions.
