On February 1st, Mr. Vo Tien Dung, Head of the Culture and Information Department of Buon Ma Thuot City ( Dak Lak ), announced that the City People's Committee had issued a plan to organize gong and drum cultural performances to serve the people and tourists in the area.
According to the plan, the Department of Culture and Information, in coordination with the Buon Ma Thuot City Center for Culture, Sports and Tourism, will develop the program content for the coming period, with performances starting at 9:30 AM on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Initially, a pilot program will be implemented once a month on the second Sunday morning at 10/3 Square, Buon Ma Thuot City.
The program will feature performances by artisans showcasing the gong music of various ethnic groups using bronze and bamboo gongs; performances of traditional musical instruments (original or modified) related to gongs; and performances of folk songs and dances.
A gong performance illustrates the art of gong culture at a workshop in Dak Lak.
This includes musical accompaniment using gongs (both bronze and bamboo/reed gongs) or other traditional bamboo/reed musical instruments (original or modified versions); and Xoang dance or communal folk dance.
Besides gong performances, there are also other genres such as solo, duet, and ensemble performances of traditional Central Highlands instruments like the T'rưng, goong, and ding nam…
Buon Ma Thuot City also encourages cultural and artistic groups of the Tay, Nung, Thai, and Muong ethnic groups in the area to participate. The program includes an interactive session with the audience, a solemn ceremony of exchanging rings and drinking rice wine, etc.; at the same time, it strengthens connections with travel companies, associations, and businesses to promote the program and spread it widely to tourists.
According to Mr. Dung, the program aims to create opportunities for villages, hamlets, and residential areas in the city, as well as groups and teams interested in gong culture in neighboring districts and towns, to meet, exchange ideas, and learn from each other's experiences in building mass cultural and artistic movements and preserving folk art at the grassroots level. At the same time, it aims to preserve traditional folk art works that celebrate love, homeland, and the heroic traditions of the highland ethnic groups, honoring and spreading the cultural values of the 40 ethnic groups living in Buon Ma Thuot City.
