Artificial intelligence helps distinguish genuine and fake goods

Counterfeit goods destroy consumers' trust in genuine goods. That is an alarming reality today.

On the afternoon of August 11, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Intellectual Property Office in collaboration with Vina CHG Company organized a workshop on "Solutions to protect genuine goods and reputable brands", attracting the attention of many businesses.

At the event, Ms. Pham Thi Dao, Director of Anh Dao Cosmetics Production Company Limited, said that counterfeit goods are a "nightmare" for businesses with decades of experience like hers. "Any product that sells well and attracts consumers' attention is immediately counterfeited and released to the market. Building a brand is already difficult, fighting counterfeit goods is even more difficult," Ms. Dao shared; at the same time, she affirmed that she always guides customers on how to recognize and closely coordinate with authorities to handle violations.

Mr. Mai Van Thuan, General Director of Asia Company, cited a survey showing that 60% of Vietnamese consumers use helmets as gifts. However, most of these products do not meet standards. “A gift seems to show care, but if the quality is poor, it poses great risks to the user. Even on social networks, many products are sold for only 40,000 - 50,000 VND, it is difficult to ensure safety,” he warned.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ty, CEO of Non Son Fashion Company Limited, suggested that the authorities strengthen their links with localities and businesses to protect consumers, and at the same time step up propaganda so that people say “no” to fake and poor quality goods. “A finished Non Son cannot cost only 50,000 – 60,000 VND, yet it is still widely sold online and many people believe it is genuine,” he said.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Hong, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Association for Consumer Protection, said that even consumers are confused when distinguishing genuine and fake goods. Therefore, applying technology is a necessary solution. On this occasion, Vina CHG Company introduced AI (artificial intelligence) stamps to help buyers authenticate products, provide full business information and respond quickly.

From a state management perspective, Mr. Tran Giang Khue, Head of the Southern Office of the Intellectual Property Office, emphasized: Businesses, including large brands, need to proactively review, inspect, and improve product quality from the outset, alongside raising consumer awareness.
