Mr. Pham Quy Vu with his model of growing Gymnema Sylvestre - Photo: LA
Mr. Vu said that in the past, on the hilly land in Hai Lam commune, people mainly planted hybrid acacia forests or citrus fruit trees. After a period of learning about the cultivation process as well as economic efficiency, in March 2024, he decided to invest more than 100 million VND to plant Gymnema sylvestre.
The model was implemented on an area of 0.65 hectares with 12,000 seedlings. Through the practice of caring for the Gymnema sylvestre plant, it shows outstanding advantages such as adapting well to hot climates and being suitable for soil quality in hilly areas.
Just provide enough water, combined with care and fertilization according to the correct technical process, the plant will grow well, ensuring the harvest yield. Specifically, with the above model, he has harvested 2 batches with a yield of about 1.5 tons of dry leaves. After harvesting, the leaves of the Gymnema sylvestre are cleaned of weeds and mixed leaves, then washed and cut by hand, then dried and packaged to sell on the market at 60,000 VND/kg.
Gymnema Sylvestre is a herbaceous plant, belonging to the family of Asparagus. This is a precious medicinal plant used to prepare medicines to prevent and support the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, high blood fat, help blood circulation, reduce fat, reduce fatigue, stress... In our country, Gymnema Sylvestre is mainly grown in the southern and northern provinces and has only been introduced to the Central region in recent years. According to Mr. Vu's assessment, this plant is easy to grow, suitable for many different types of soil, especially areas with mountainous ecological conditions in Quang Tri .
According to Mr. Vu's experience, to grow the plant, you should choose a land that is convenient for irrigation and drainage. The land is plowed and left fallow to eliminate all pathogens, then raised into beds 20 - 30 cm high. Each bed is 1.2 - 1.5 m apart so that the plant can receive the most sunlight and is convenient for care.
On top, make a trellis of bamboo or A-shaped fishing net for the vine to climb on. The planting density is about 1,000 plants/pole. The appropriate planting time is from April to July every year. After planting, use straw to cover the base of the plant and cover the entire bed to retain moisture and limit weeds.
A special feature of the Gymnema Sylvestre plant is that it only needs to be planted once but can be harvested for over 10 years. The time from planting to harvesting takes about 7 months. Harvesting time is concentrated from April to October every year. On average, each year, Gymnema Sylvestre plant produces 3-4 harvests, harvested once every 2 months.
To ensure the safety standards of the Gymnema Sylvestre plant, Mr. Vu minimizes the use of chemical pesticides during the care process, only cleans weeds manually; combines checking and removing parts of the plant when detecting pests, not letting them spread widely.
Mr. Vu said that from the third crop onwards, the Gymnema Sylvestre plant began to yield a stable harvest with a yield of over 1 ton of dry leaves per crop. It is expected that with about 4 harvests per year, after deducting expenses, he will earn over 120 million VND in profit from this model.
Sharing about his upcoming plans, Mr. Vu said that in addition to selling dried leaves, he is planning to invest in a production line for instant Gymnema tea and tea bags to diversify his products. At the same time, he is also expanding his area to meet the increasing demand of the market.
