North Korea accuses US of allowing Cuban embassy to be 'terrorist attacked'

In a statement published by the KCNA news agency on October 1, a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Washington had ignored ensuring the safety of the Cuban mission in the US and only wanted to put countries it did not like, such as Cuba, on the list of "state sponsors of terrorism".

Along with Cuba, three countries North Korea, Syria and Iran are also on the above list of the US State Department .

An attacker threw two petrol bombs at the Cuban Embassy in Washington DC on September 24, but no one was injured and there was no significant damage.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said it was a "grave terrorist attack", recalling a similar incident in 2020, when someone fired a rifle at the Cuban embassy in the US.

"This proves that the above-mentioned incidents were clearly carried out with the tacit connivance of the US administration," the unidentified North Korean spokesman said in the statement.

US authorities arrested and charged a man shortly after the 2020 shooting.

The North Korean spokesman said the US should "admit responsibility not only for the recent incident but also for all past terrorist incidents and investigate the truth to show its sincerity", instead of declaring some countries "state sponsors of terrorism".

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington strongly condemned the attack on the Cuban embassy and that US law enforcement would investigate the incident. The US Secret Service said no one was in custody while the investigation was ongoing.

The Cuban embassy in Washington, DC, reopened in 2015 as Cuba and the US restored diplomatic relations. Havana said Washington's designation of Cuba as a "state sponsor of terrorism" and maintenance of a Cold War-era economic embargo were unjustified.
