Growing macadamia on forest land brings many benefits

Macadamia is known as the "king of nuts" rich in protein and vegetable oil, favored by domestic and international markets. It is a forestry tree with the ability to prevent erosion, retain soil, increase coverage and improve ecology.

In 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) recognized macadamia as a forestry crop. This is an important turning point, opening up the direction of developing macadamia trees associated with forest land, in line with the goal of greening, developing forestry economy and green growth.

The whole province has a fairly large area of 3 types of forest planned, but there is still a situation where forestry land has no forest or is encroached upon and used for the wrong purpose. This is a challenge, but also a space for macadamia development on forest land. If organized properly, macadamia trees will help "green" bare land and bring a stable source of income to people, contributing to fundamentally solving the problem of forest management and protection.

According to Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Le Trong Yen, in order to effectively manage and use the encroached forest land area, relevant departments and branches must propagate and mobilize people to comply with the law, participate in forest protection and use forestry land according to planning. At the same time, it is necessary to develop appropriate land use plans, in which it is necessary to encourage the development of combined agro-forestry models, planting perennial trees with economic value and suitable for the soil, contributing to increasing income, and greening bare land and hills.

Macadamia trees bring many benefits to sustainable agricultural development and income improvement.

According to the plan, by 2030, Lam Dong strives to have 37,000 hectares of macadamia, of which 23,000 hectares are on agricultural land and 14,000 hectares are on forestry land. To realize the goal, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province aims to expand macadamia in two directions: intercropping in industrial tree gardens and planting on forestry land that has no forest or is being used for the wrong purpose. At the same time, the province needs to develop concentrated pure growing areas in enterprises and cooperatives to create a synchronous raw material area.

Along with that, the value chain linkage between farmers - businesses - scientists - government must be promoted, to ensure that from planting, care to processing and consumption are linked, creating a stable market. Credit policies, preferential loans, and technical support are important driving forces to help the macadamia industry develop sustainably. When there is a synchronous ecosystem, Lam Dong macadamia will be competitive enough in the international market.

It can be affirmed that macadamia can absolutely become a strategic tree, contributing to diversifying agricultural and forestry products, increasing farmers' income. In particular, when associated with forest land, macadamia not only brings economic benefits, but also restores forests, protects the environment, limits erosion and effectively uses encroached forest land. This is an inevitable direction for Lam Dong to both develop the economy and solve existing problems in forest land management, moving towards the goal of sustainable development.
