According to the Chinese Supreme Court, the father, Zhang Bo, had an affair with Ye Chengchen. He initially hid the fact that he was married and had children, but Ye found out and Zhang divorced his wife.
The court heard that Ye viewed Zhang’s two children as “obstacles” to their marriage and “burdens on their future lives”. She repeatedly urged Zhang to kill the toddlers and threatened to leave him if he did not.
According to the court, after conspiring with Ye, Zhang threw his two-year-old daughter and one-year-old son from his 15th-floor apartment in November 2020 while they were playing by the bedroom window, killing both. Zhang and Ye were sentenced to death in December 2021.
China's Supreme People's Court said the couple's crimes “severely challenged the bottom line of law and morality,” calling their motives “extremely despicable” and “particularly cruel,” according to the official Xinhua news agency.
News of the couple’s executions drew hundreds of millions of views on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, where the case became a top trending topic. “They deserve to be punished,” said one top comment with 27,000 likes.
A 2020 study found that 68% of Chinese people support the death penalty. Wednesday's execution was carried out by the main method used in China: lethal injection.
