(Dan Tri) - The literature test in the 2025 high school graduation exam does not use materials from textbooks. According to teachers, a sincere and in-depth essay will always create a good impression.

On June 26, more than 1.1 million candidates across 63 provinces and cities will take the 2025 high school graduation exam with the first subject of the morning being literature.

2025 is the first year of implementing high school graduation exams according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program with the orientation of developing students' qualities and abilities.

The literature exam will not use textbook materials. This has completely ended speculation about which works the exam will focus on. The exam will focus on assessing the candidates' thinking ability, literary appreciation and expression ability.

This new way of creating exam questions will bring a lot of expectations, anticipation as well as a lot of anxiety and excitement to candidates.

Present at the exam site of Nguyen Du Secondary School, Ha Tinh city on the afternoon of June 25 to complete exam procedures, Thanh Thao (class 12A8, Phan Dinh Phung High School), said that the innovation in the literature exam will avoid the situation of students learning by rote, reciting and copying sample texts.

"The new way of giving exam questions helps us to be more comfortable and always proactive in accessing new information, and paying attention to life and surrounding events. Although I am a bit curious about the exam questions, I do not feel nervous or worried because I have prepared the best for tomorrow," Thao shared.

Mr. Phan Van Hoa, a literature teacher at Nguyen Trung Thien High School (Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh), assessed that the way this year's literature exam was designed ensured objectivity and promoted students' qualities and abilities in accordance with the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program.

This will avoid the cases of reading, copying, using sample texts, learning by heart, and studying lopsidedly as before. Instead, the exam will help students demonstrate their thinking and ability to apply in the exam.

"Previously, the exam questions were based on a framework, such as how many works would be included in the 12th grade exam and the literary essay question would be worth 5 points, accounting for 50% of the total score in the exam. Thus, students only needed to read carefully and memorize to get the score. But now the exam materials will not be in the textbook, which requires students to think and demonstrate their true abilities," Mr. Hoa shared.

Students will have more "room to perform"

According to Mr. Phan Van Hoa, the new exam has two parts: reading comprehension and writing, the writing part includes social commentary and literary commentary. To do well on the exam, Mr. Hoa believes that students must first have the skills to do the parts of the exam. These skills focus on the candidate's thinking, qualities and abilities.

"Students need to pay attention to current events and practical knowledge. Because bringing in social commentary is to prevent students from being indifferent to life. Therefore, current events and socio -political issues are very easy to include in the exam, for example, issues related to youth and the country," said Mr. Hoa.

Sharing the same opinion, Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Giang, a literature teacher at Hong Linh High School, Ha Tinh, said that to do well on the exam with materials outside of the textbook, students need to prepare some core skills.

In this, students need to have the ability to read quickly, know how to skim to grasp the main idea, then read carefully the key parts to analyze. From there, they will know how to analyze, infer, find the message of the text, and relate it to their own knowledge and experience to clarify the problem.

Along with that, students need to know how to present their thoughts clearly, logically, emotionally and with strong arguments.

According to teacher Quynh Giang, the innovation of the literature exam has both opened up opportunities and posed many challenges. In terms of opportunities, students are no longer limited to fixed texts, which helps them apply social knowledge and personal experience to analyze and evaluate problems.

Students have more room to express their opinions, personalities and language skills. Regarding challenges, Ms. Giang said that some students are not used to reading and understanding texts outside of textbooks, and lack the skills to quickly analyze, draw conclusions and make connections, so they encounter many difficulties.

"You need to be calm, confident in your abilities, read the questions carefully, analyze the questions carefully and write in your own voice and thoughts. A sincere, clear, and profound essay will always make a good impression on the examiner," Ms. Quynh Giang shared.

On the afternoon of June 25, more than 17,300 candidates taking the 2025 High School Graduation Exam in Ha Tinh were present at the exam sites to complete procedures.

At 36 examination sites in Ha Tinh, 750 examination rooms have been arranged and more than 3,000 officers have been mobilized for duty.

At 7:35 a.m. on June 26, candidates will take the literature exam in essay format, lasting 120 minutes. In the afternoon of the same day, at 2:30 p.m., candidates will continue to take the math exam in multiple-choice format for 90 minutes.
