After more than a week of fundraising, parents have contributed nearly 28.5 billion VND to the American International School Vietnam (AISVN), but it still needs 96.5 billion VND to operate until the end of the school year.
In an open letter dated April 9th, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced that since April 1st, when the fundraising campaign began, 748 parents of students at the American International School have agreed to contribute money to maintain the school's operations until the end of this school year.
As of 3 PM yesterday, the account jointly owned by AISVN, the Department, and parents had received nearly 28.5 billion VND. After paying salaries, insurance for teachers and staff, and expenses related to teaching activities, the remaining amount was over 9.5 billion VND.
"We acknowledge and sincerely thank the parents for their sharing and support," the letter stated.
However, the Department estimates that the current balance "is insufficient to sustain in-person teaching for the entire school until the end of the school year."
The Department stated that it had met with representatives from 748 parents, receiving proposals for in-person teaching for students whose families had contributed financially, and online teaching for those who had not. However, the Department "still prioritizes the solution of students attending school in person."
"Therefore, we earnestly hope that parents will join hands, agree, and contribute financially to maintain the school's operations so that students' learning in the final months of the school year will not be interrupted," the open letter stated.

Earlier on March 30th, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ut Em, Chairwoman of the School Board, stated that AISVN was facing financial difficulties and needed 125 billion VND to operate until the end of June. She requested additional support from parents ranging from 9.5 to 25.5 million VND per student per month, in addition to the tuition fees already paid. These contributions from parents would be considered a short-term loan, to be repaid by the school once operations stabilize or converted into shares.
AISVN was established in 2006, with its campus located in Nha Be District. The school currently has over 1,310 students, the majority of whom are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program (grades 1 to 12). Tuition fees at AISVN range from 280 to 725 million VND per year, depending on the grade level. Last July, the school attracted attention when parents gathered to demand payment of outstanding debts. On March 18th, all students had to stay home from school because most teachers were unable to teach due to unpaid salaries.
Since the beginning of April, thanks to contributions from parents, AISVN students have returned to school and are following the regular timetable.
