Veteran Nguyen Huu Tinh (born in 1953), in Muong Thanh ward, Dien Bien Phu city (Dien Bien province) excitedly shared his memories of directly participating in the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign.

Taking a sip of green tea, veteran Nguyen Huu Tinh fluently recounted a story from more than 50 years ago. In 1971, while a student at the Central School of Finance and Accounting, the young man Nguyen Huu Tinh put aside his dream of studying to volunteer for military service. After a period of training and mobilization to the Central Highlands, at the end of 1972, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tinh was assigned to Company 12, Battalion 3, Regiment 28, Division 10, under the Central Highlands Front Command. Due to the urgent requirements of the battlefield, he and his comrades marched and participated in many fierce battles on the way from the Central Highlands to Saigon during the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign.

At this point, Mr. Tinh's voice suddenly became excited: "I still remember clearly April 29, 1975, our unit rapidly entered Cu Chi. On the morning of April 30, we participated in the capture and control of Tan Son Nhat airport and the puppet general staff. The feeling at that time was indescribable, joyful, emotional and full of pride because the Fatherland had won completely...".

After the war ended and the country was unified, Mr. Tinh returned to continue his unfinished studies. In 1978, after graduating, he began a new journey of building and reconstructing his homeland.

Veteran Nguyen Huu Tinh shares memories of the time when he "split Truong Son to save the country".

Since 1982, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tinh has worked at the Department of Finance of Lai Chau province (formerly), then the Finance Department of Tuan Giao district (later Dien Bien province). With his prestige and capacity, he was entrusted with many important responsibilities, from Vice Chairman to Chairman of Tuan Giao district People's Committee until his retirement in 2011. No matter what position he held, he always maintained the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, working and dedicating himself to the people and the development of the locality.

“I always keep in mind that the responsibility of a soldier is not only to hold a gun and fight on the front line, but also to contribute to building the homeland in peacetime. The spirit of Uncle Ho's soldiers is not only bravery and resilience, but also responsibility, simplicity, closeness to the people and living for the people,” Mr. Tinh shared.

After retirement, he still diligently participates in social work, inspires the younger generation, contributes to the great national unity bloc and strives for a renewed and civilized Dien Bien.

In the process of researching to write about those who directly participated in the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, we met veteran Hoang Ngoc Thanh. To his friends and comrades, veteran Hoang Ngoc Thanh is not only one of the people who directly participated in the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, but also a living testament to the spirit of dedication. Returning after the war, with his injuries, he still constantly strived to integrate into daily life and became one of the pioneers actively participating in the movements of Thanh Truong Ward, Dien Bien Phu City.

Veteran Hoang Ngoc Thanh (right) is always exemplary, taking the lead in movements and receiving attention from local authorities and Party committees.

Sharing with us, Mr. Thanh emotionally expressed: “We are always grateful to the local Party Committee and government for always accompanying, caring for both material and spiritual needs, creating conditions for war invalids, sick soldiers, and families of policy beneficiaries to overcome difficulties and rise up…”.

Returning to normal life, veterans continue to contribute to the development of their homeland by being exemplary models in implementing the Party's policies and the State's laws. In addition, veterans are also active in emulation movements: "Exemplary veterans", "All people unite to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas", "All people protect national security".

Dien Bien Phu City veterans visit high-income economic model.

The Southern liberation soldiers of the past still constantly propagate and educate the younger generation about patriotism, revolutionary traditions, fight against deviant and negative thoughts, contributing to preserving the purity of the government apparatus and the ideological foundation of society.

Thanh Binh Bridge, Dien Bien Phu City connects the two banks of the Nam Rom River.
The landscape of Hill A1 relic is spacious, clean and beautiful, always attracting a large number of tourists.

In particular, promoting the precious qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, many veterans actively participate in emulation movements to develop production. According to statistics, currently, the whole Dien Bien province has 42 enterprises, 12 cooperatives, 662 models of farms and comprehensive farms of veterans bringing high income. From 2019 to early 2025, 350 veteran households have escaped poverty (reducing the rate of poor households in the whole Association to 10%, increasing the rate of well-off households to 42%); many grassroots associations have 100% of veteran member families having escaped poverty.

Dien Bien has changed dramatically with new roads, spacious schools, synchronous investment in infrastructure, and increasingly improved people's lives. These achievements could not have been possible without the contributions of veterans, those who directly held guns for the aspiration of peace and devoted themselves to building a prosperous homeland.
