Valuable documents about the cart and buffalo convoy pulling food to the Dien Bien Phu frontline

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - During the Dien Bien Phu campaign, Thanh Hoa province mobilized hundreds of thousands of civilian laborers, nearly 30 million man-days of work, and more than 10,000 vehicles to transport food, weapons, medicine, and ammunition.
On the morning of April 6th, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7th, 1954 - May 7th, 2024), the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, in coordination with the Standing Committee of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, organized a program titled "Meeting and expressing gratitude to Dien Bien Phu soldiers, youth volunteers, and civilian workers who directly participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign." The meeting was attended by approximately 800 veterans of the Dien Bien Phu campaign, youth volunteers, and civilian workers who directly participated in the campaign, along with relatives of martyrs who died in the Dien Bien Phu campaign, from the Red River Delta and North Central provinces. The organizers displayed hundreds of valuable documents, recording the heroic historical images of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Visiting the exhibition, the Dien Bien Phu veterans were deeply moved and emotional as they looked back at the battles on the battlefields. Among the hundreds of documentary images at the exhibition, there are many valuable documents about the contributions of the military and people of Thanh Hoa province – a major rear base ensuring logistical support for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. According to statistics, during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, Thanh Hoa province mobilized 30% of its working-age population to participate in the civilian labor force, totaling nearly 179,000 people and 27 million man-days of labor. In particular, during the 56 days and nights of the campaign, Thanh Hoa mobilized more than 10,000 bicycles, 1,300 bamboo and wooden boats; 47 horse-drawn carts, 31 automobiles, and 180 ox carts to transport food supplies to the front lines. Thanh Hoa supplied 4,361 tons of rice, exceeding the central government's target by 9 tons; 1,300 cows, 2,000 pigs, and 250,000 eggs... This wheelbarrow belongs to the family of Mr. Trinh Dinh Bam (a worker from Dinh Lien commune, Yen Dinh district, Thanh Hoa province). The wheelbarrow is made of altar wood and has a carrying capacity of approximately 180kg. Civilian laborers used ox carts to transport food and weapons to the front lines. People in the mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa province used rafts to transport food and goods across the Ma River to support the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. One group of civilian laborers after another transported rice to the front lines. Engineering troops and civilian labor brigades rushed to build a road from Tuan Giao to Dien Bien Phu. Mr. Nguyen Trong Ap (91 years old, from Dong Quang commune, Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province) emotionally recalled the days when he and the engineering corps helped build the road to Dien Bien Phu. "Today, I am very moved to meet the soldiers who participated in the campaign all those years ago. Looking back at these precious images, these battles from the past, I feel like I'm returning to a glorious era," Mr. Ap said emotionally. Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Do Van Chien, and Secretary of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, Do Trong Hung, visited the photo exhibition at the program.
