On May 16, Google said that from December 2023, the company will delete Google accounts that have not been used for two years to prevent security threats, including computer system attacks (hacking).

Specifically, if not used or logged in for at least 2 years, a Google account and its Google Workspace content, such as Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, and Calendar, may be deleted.

This policy change from Google only applies to personal accounts and does not target organizational accounts such as schools or businesses.

In 2020, Google announced that it would delete content stored in an inactive account, but not delete the account itself.

Google said it will send successive notifications to the primary email address and recovery email of the inactive account before officially deleting the account.

Last week, billionaire Elon Musk made a similar move when he announced that he would delete Twitter accounts that had been inactive for several years, saying that the move was important to “free up abandoned usernames.”
