Swedish industrial design and construction company Modvion has just completed the installation of a 150-meter-tall wooden wind turbine (pictured), the tallest wooden wind turbine ever recorded in the world .
Height is one of the crucial factors for a wind turbine, as it determines the wind sweeping and energy harvesting capabilities of the blades. However, constructing and installing tall turbines using steel, as is currently common practice, presents many difficulties, especially onshore installations, due to the need for a proportionally increased turbine body diameter and structural weight.
To construct the turbines, Modvion chose thin sheets of pine wood, which facilitated the creation of the turbine's curved angles, and industrial adhesive to bond multiple layers together according to the mold of each individual module. These modules were then transported and assembled into a complete turbine right at the construction site. The aforementioned turbine is installed in conjunction with a 2-megawatt generator.
