Vietnam Davis Cup team successfully stays in Group III

Tireless efforts helped the Vietnamese tennis team win 2-1 against Sri Lanka in the relegation play-off match for Group III of the 2025 Davis Cup Asia - Oceania region.

Late on July 19, good news came to Vietnamese tennis when we continued to stay in group III of the Davis Cup and did not fall to group IV as mentioned after the loss to Singapore.

In the first singles match, Pham La Hoang Anh had his first victory. Hoang Anh defeated Ashen Silva with a score of 2-0 (6-3, 7-5).

In the second singles match, Vu Ha Minh Duc met Harshana Godamanna. His opponent had a difficult playing style and Minh Duc could not overcome the Sri Lankan player. He lost 3-6 and 2-6.

Tied 1-1 after two singles matches, the hope of the Vietnam Davis Cup team rests on the duo Dinh Viet Tuan Minh and Nguyen Van Phuong. If they win, Vietnamese tennis will successfully stay in the rankings.

In the doubles match, Godamanna participated after only 30 minutes of rest. The 40-year-old tennis player paired with Nilaweera, a 20-year-old tennis player, with the responsibility of supporting his senior.

Set 1, Van Phuong and Tuan Minh won 6-2. Van Phuong has recovered after having health problems. Van Phuong's direct serves are impressive.

Not allowing the home team to end the match early, the Sri Lankan duo fought fiercely in set 2. The two teams had to go into a tie-break to determine the winner. Sri Lanka won 7-6 in this set.

The match and the fate of the two teams were decided in the third set. Van Phuong continued to serve well to gain an advantage. Tuan Minh also played well to help the Vietnam Davis Cup team break their serve.

In the end, Van Phuong - Tuan Minh won 6-2 after two points ended the match. In the end, the Vietnam Davis Cup team won 2-1 against Sri Lanka in the Group III relegation play-off match.

This tournament is a great opportunity to learn, especially when playing against opponents ranked high on the rankings. I will summarize the experience to prepare for the SEA Games in Thailand."

Van Phuong said: "I'm sad because I couldn't help the team get promoted, but I'm happy that the Vietnam Davis Cup team is staying in group III. Hopefully next year, the Vietnam tennis team will get promoted."
