U22 Indonesia lost to U22 Philippines in group C of men's football at SEA Games 33. |
U22 Indonesia entered the group stage of the 33rd SEA Games men's football full of confidence thanks to their position as defending champions. However, the 0-1 defeat to U22 Philippines on the evening of December 8 put U22 Indonesia at a disadvantage.
The defeat not only made the chance of U22 Indonesia reaching the SEA Games semi-finals more difficult, but was also a slap in the face of the archipelago's football scene because throughout history, the Philippines has not been a tough opponent for Indonesia.
Greg Nwokolo, who is known for his outspoken style, criticized Indra Sjafri for failing to improve Indonesia's play and the coach's controversial comments after the match, when criticizing the country's young players.
"With all due respect, coach Indra, the game is 90 minutes and this is your excuse? Blame the players?" Greg wrote on his personal page.

Mr. Sjafri can be considered one of the famous coaches with a "cool hand" with youth football in Southeast Asia. |
The former Persija Jakarta player also said that the U22 Indonesia team's playing style was terrible. He even asserted that the players seemed to have never trained together: "Yesterday I watched a team with a confused playing style, as if they had never trained together before."
Nwokolo also said that Indonesian football has too many problems behind the scenes, while other countries are working hard to improve their football. "Other countries are seriously developing their football, but in our country Indonesia, football is just endless drama and farce," he added.
With a 1-0 win, U22 Philippines created a shock in Group C and became the first team to win a ticket to the semi-finals of the 33rd SEA Games. Meanwhile, U22 Indonesia had to win big against Myanmar in the last round, and hoped that the match between U22 Vietnam and U22 Malaysia in Group C would not end in a draw.
