Cambodia will no longer have any members participating in the 33rd SEA Games. |
On the morning of December 10th, Cambodia decided to withdraw from all 12 registered sports, just one day after its sports delegation attended the opening ceremony at Rajamangala Stadium (Bangkok).
This decision has shaken the regional sports scene. According to Thai media, the Cambodian delegation of 137 athletes and officials received warnings from senior leaders to consider withdrawing due to the tense and escalating situation at the Thai-Cambodian border area.
In an interview with The Nation , Thai Deputy Prime Minister Thamanat Prompow acknowledged that the host government had expressed concerns about the safety of Cambodian athletes at the SEA Games.
Due to this concern, the Thai Prime Minister directed the implementation of additional protective measures, including the deployment of police and military forces. On December 9th, Mr. Prompow ordered increased security measures to ensure the safety of the Cambodian athletes.
However, by the morning of December 10, the Cambodian delegation decided to withdraw. Thairath newspaper reported that the Thai government is taking security measures to ensure the safety of the Cambodian delegation on their journey back home.
