Valve explains why Steam Deck 2 won't be released soon

According to Neowin , Valve unexpectedly announced a new version of Steam Deck OLED on November 9, bringing the game console with a more beautiful OLED HDR screen, improved battery life, Wi-Fi 6E, and even lighter weight. Along with the new OLED version being launched, Valve engineers said that "Steam Deck 2" is still a few years away from being released.

In an interview, UX designer Lawrence Yang at Valve confirmed that the company is actively working on Steam Deck 2. However, he said that creating a successor to Steam Deck is still tied to performance issues, so in order to have a real device to call 'Steam Deck 2', the team at Valve needs to see a generational performance increase, which is expected to be around 10-30%.

Valve Wants Steam Deck 2 to Get a Performance Boost

Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat added that the team still wants to learn more from the design of the first Steam Deck. While the OLED model uses a similar design, future versions of the Steam Deck could see major design changes.

Both engineers expect the chip’s performance to increase over the next two to three years as the technology matures. This fits with the reasonable upgrade timeline for gaming hardware, and also gives Valve time to put into practice the lessons learned from Steam Deck.

Earlier in September, Valve senior software engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said that faster handheld gaming devices wouldn't be coming for a few years. The company wants to maintain power efficiency and battery life for more powerful performance.

While fans may be hoping to get the new hardware sooner, Valve still wants to avoid releasing a console that doesn't perform as well as expected. Players can expect Steam Deck 2 to actually launch around 2024 or 2025, assuming the chip industry can keep up with the supply and performance.
